Job summary

GCS Recruitment is seeking an experienced Field Technician to support end-to-end fiber testing, characterization, and network deployment activities. The technician will test and troubleshoot fiber infrastructure, interpret OTDR results, and ensure projects meet customer requirements and timelines.

Ideal candidate has hands-on ISP/OSP fiber experience, OTDR testing, fiber characterization, and knowledge of fiber optic cables and telecommunications networks.

Job Summary

We are seeking an experienced Field Technician to support end-to-end fiber testing, characterization, and network deployment activities. The technician will be responsible for testing and troubleshooting fiber infrastructure, analyzing OTDR test results, identifying network issues, and ensuring fiber projects are completed according to customer requirements and project timelines.

The ideal candidate will have hands-on experience with ISP/OSP fiber infrastructure, OTDR testing, fiber characterization, fiber optic cables, and telecommunications networks.

Key Responsibilities

• Perform fiber testing to evaluate cable connectivity, fiber characterization, and overall network performance.
• Perform OTDR testing and analyze/interpret OTDR test results.
• Conduct field analysis to identify fiber cable and network failures.
• Work with both ISP (Inside Plant) and OSP (Outside Plant) fiber infrastructure.
• Support the testing and delivery of metro dark fiber and long-haul fiber networks.
• Troubleshoot fiber connectivity and performance issues.
• Work with various fiber types, physical interfaces, connectors, and splicing methodologies.
• Maintain accurate documentation for fiber cable, strands, testing results, and network performance.
• Coordinate with vendors, internal teams, project managers, and stakeholders to ensure project deadlines are met.
• Ensure vendors meet required technical standards and delivery timelines.
• Support site delivery requirements including grounding, power standards, rack layouts, cable routing, cooling systems, and POE access/routing.
• Communicate project progress, technical issues, and estimated completion dates to project management teams.
• Travel to customer facilities as required.

Required Qualifications

• Associate degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Network Engineering, Telecommunications, or a related technical field, or equivalent relevant experience.
• Hands-on experience with ISP and OSP physical fiber infrastructure.
• Strong experience using OTDR (Optical Time Domain Reflectometer) equipment.
• Ability to understand and interpret OTDR test results.
• Experience with fiber characterization and fiber optic testing.
• Experience with fiber optic cable design and implementation projects.
• Strong understanding of fiber and telecommunications infrastructure projects.
• Knowledge of different fiber types, connectors, and physical interfaces.
• Strong understanding of fiber splicing methodologies.
• Excellent communication, organizational, troubleshooting, and customer-service skills.
• Ability to travel to customer sites as needed.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience delivering telecommunications infrastructure, space, and power through third-party suppliers.
• Knowledge of Dark Fiber delivery.
• Hands-on knowledge of fusion splicing and related splicing processes.
• Understanding of interconnectivity requirements within carrier hotels/data center environments.
• Knowledge of cable types, connector types, physical interfaces, and riser details.
• Strong project-management and vendor-management skills.
