Job summary

LCUB is seeking a Fiber Design Engineer to support network expansion, upgrades, and maintenance by delivering detailed design packages for FTTH projects. Job description

Lenoir City Utilities Board, a municipal utility providing electric, water, wastewater, gas and fiber services to the Lenoir City, Loudon County, Farragut, and West Knoxville areas, is seeking a Fiber Design Engineer. This position plays a key role in supporting network expansion, system upgrades, and ongoing maintenance by delivering high-quality, detailed design packages. Strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and effective communication are essential, along with the ability to work collaboratively across departments and maintain positive relationships with customers, contractors, and business partners.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
  • Conduct site walks for residential and commercial properties to verify field conditions
  • Create fiber design packages including construction prints, splice plans, and BOMs
  • Update and maintain accurate as-built documentation
  • Collaborate with the Fiber Installation and OSP teams to ensure design feasibility
  • Coordinate design changes based on field feedback and engineering requirements
  • Maintain organized digital records of all design files and revisions
  • Assist with material planning by providing accurate quantities and specifications
  • Support the development of design standards and documentation processes

  • Perform other duties as directed by supervisor
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
  • High school graduate or GED (general education degree)
  • Ability to read and interpret color-coded construction prints, schematics, and splice documentation.
  • 1-2 years of experience using GIS-based or CAD-based design software.
  • 1-2 years of experience working in or supporting the design and deployment of fiber optic outside plant environments (aerial or underground).
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Associates/Bachelors/Masters degree in Engineering Technology, Drafting, GIS, or related field.
  • Fiber optic training and/or related certifications.
  • 3-5 years of experience with fiber network design for FTTH and commercial deployments or equivalent network design experience.
  • 3-5 years of experience working in or supporting fiber optic outside plant environments (aerial AND underground).
  • 1-2 years of experience using Fiber Network Management software (Crescent Link experience preferred) or equivalent GIS experience.
  • 2-3 years of experience creating fiber splice plans and/or detailed construction drawings.
  • 2-3 years of experience coordinating with field crews, contractors, or engineering teams.
