GENERAL PURPOSE
Working under the supervision of the Lead Cable Technician, the Fiber Construction Technician II is responsible for the installation, maintenance and troubleshooting of the hybrid/fiber/coaxial system (HFC), ensuring all work adheres to industry standards and company policy.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Install, operate and maintain overhead and underground hybrid fiber coax (HFC) communication system. The system includes, but is not limited to, coaxial and fiber optics cable; enclosures; connectors; terminators; boxes (overhead and underground); and splicing.
- Install messenger cable, anchors and related hardware and equipment. Install underground cable and boxes according to industry codes and standards.
- Read and update utility maps and follow build procedures to completion of jobs
- Prepare, install, and splice fiber optic cables in underground and aerial enclosures using fusion equipment for both single fiber and ribbon splicing, including ribbonizing as needed.
- Use OTDR, TDR, voltage meter, RF signal meter, optical power meter, back reflection meter to perform pre and post installation tests and document fiber and coax splice loss for acceptable readings to meet plant and customer specifications. Record and document all system readings for final test.
- Read and maintain splice matrix documentation for all installations and repairs.
- Operate heavy machinery and specialized SFCN equipment-including backhoes, bore machines, forklifts, trenchers, mini-excavators, bucket trucks, and power rodders-to dig and refill trenches for conduit installation, in accordance with procedures outlined in the SFCN training documentation. Install and connect underground conduit as needed.
- Install, terminate and troubleshoot coaxial and fiber cabling in customer's homes, including digital boxes, cable modems, wireless routers, and configuration.
- Troubleshoot phone wiring and RJ-45 wiring, fax machine and phone problems at customers' homes and or businesses.
- Identify, document, and troubleshoot cable signal leakage (CLI) in accordance with FCC regulations. Document, track, and report maintenance, installation, and troubleshooting activities in a timely and accurate manner, ensuring proper records are kept.
- Professional positive attitude with good communication skills.
- Ability to work from drawings and specifications and use measuring and testing instruments as needed in the operation of HFC cable systems.
- Adhere to all safety guidelines and protocols while operating machinery and performing tasks to minimize risk and ensure safety compliance. Wear appropriate PPE, and adhere to safety guidelines.
- Ability to work collaboratively with other technicians, contractors, and teams to ensure project completion and system functionality.
- Must be able to work in varying weather conditions and perform physical tasks, including lifting heavy equipment and working at heights.
- This position involves fieldwork, requiring frequent travel to job sites, both residential and commercial, with occasional on-call emergency response as needed.
Must be able to meet attendance and punctuality requirements for this position. Must abide by all city policies and procedures. Must work well with others and be a team player.
Must live within 30 minutes' travel time from Spanish Fork's city limits in order to respond to emergencies.
Performs related duties as assigned.
POSITION QUALIFICATIONS
- Education and Experience: High school diploma or equivalent, with a minimum of two (2) years of experience as a cable/fiber technician or installer. Experience in outside plant construction is .
- Necessary Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Strong background of electrical theory and application.
- Extensive knowledge in application of coaxial and optical fiber cabling, connectorizing, splicing, and related applications.
- Skill in the operation of specialized equipment, including testing and diagnostic tools.
- Ability to install and maintain pole line construction and underground conduit systems.
- Ability to perform minor equipment maintenance and repairs.
- Strong problem-solving abilities, especially in high stress situations.
- Ability to work well independently and as part of a team.
- Special Qualifications:
- Must possess a valid Utah drivers license
- Fiber Optic Certification ,
- Fork Lift certification ,
- Certification in cable installations and operations .
