Position Overview

This position with NCDOT offers full State Benefits, competitive salaries, and many career development opportunities. Employees perform responsible work on board U.S. Coast Guard certified vessels, under supervision, focusing on safety during passenger and vehicle loading/unloading, and maintaining deck and mechanical equipment. The role includes enforcing safety and security regulations per U.S. Coast Guard standards and may involve shore duties.

Work Location and Schedule

Based at the Pamlico River Ferry Operations, this position involves shift work — 7 days on, 7 days off.

Requirements
  • Presentation of TWIC and valid USCG Merchant Mariner’s Credential, including a current medical card, at interview.
  • Knowledge of basic seamanship, firefighting principles, rescue boat operation, and personal survival techniques.
  • Experience in launching and operating rescue boats and recovering persons from water.
  • Ability to demonstrate proper fire extinguisher use.
  • Possession of a valid Ordinary Seaman Certificate issued by the US Coast Guard.
  • Possession of a Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC).
