Job Duties: Consider working for the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT), Hampton Roads District, Jamestown Scotland Ferry in Surry County. We are seeking individuals interested in joining our team to serve as members of a ferry boat crew, adhering to all US Coast Guard and VDOT regulations while representing VDOT positively. This position involves operating a ferry boat of over 100 feet on inland waterways. Duties are routine and manual, supervised by the Ferry Captain or other licensed personnel.

As a Ferry Crew Member, You Will:

  1. Assist in loading, blocking, and unloading vehicles.
  2. Oil, lubricate, service vessel, and clean machinery and moving parts as required.
  3. Perform custodial work and painting.
  4. Patrol deck to ensure safe and orderly conduct of passengers.

This position is essential for emergency operations and may require work outside normal hours, including weekends and holidays, during emergencies such as inclement weather or disasters, to ensure public safety, in accordance with DPM 1-27.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Ability to perform manual labor with hand tools.
  • Ability to participate in emergency response activities.
  • Customer-focused communication skills.
  • Basic knowledge of seamanship, line-handling, and marine terminology.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Ability to obtain a Merchant Mariner Credential endorsed as AB or QMED within two years of hire.

Additional Considerations:

  • Hold a Merchant Mariner Credential endorsed as AB, QMED, or higher.
  • High school diploma, GED, or equivalent experience.
  • Possess a TWIC card.
  • First Aid and CPR certifications.
  • Emergency Helmsman certification.

Valid driver’s license, TWIC, First Aid, CPR, and safety shoes are mandatory. This role is critical during emergencies and may require work outside regular hours.
