Description of Work

This position with NCDOT offers full State Benefits , competitive salaries and many career development opportunities.

Individuals in this class perform conventional responsible work on board U.S. Coast Guard certified vessels. Assessment of work is accomplished under the supervision of the Able-Bodied Seaman and Ferry Master on the basis of safety in relation to the directing, loading and unloading of passengers and vehicles off and on the ferries. Other duties include the maintaining of deck and electrical/mechanical equipment and passenger facilities. Employee is responsible for enforcing safety and security regulations as outlined by the U.S. Coast Guard regulations. Employees may perform shore duties, and all other duties as assigned.

This position works out of the Pamlico River Ferry Operations.

This position works shift work - 7 days on and 7 days off.

A COPY OF BOTH TWIC AND VALID USCG MERCHANT MARINERS CREDENTIAL INCLUDING A CURRENT MEDICAL CARD MUST BE PRESENTED AT THE INTERVIEW PROCESS.

Knowledge, Skills And Abilities / Competencies

Applicants must submit an application that clearly reflects work experience that demonstrates the following:

  • Knowledge of basic seamanship knowledge and terms, such as marlinspike, helm commands and shipboard terms.
  • Knowledge of basic firefighting principles: with regards to different classes of fires and how to extinguish them, proper fire hose handling techniques.
  • Experience in launching and operation of a rescue boat and recovering an unconscious person from the water.
  • Experience in personal Survival Techniques and Personal Safety/Social Responsibility.
  • Demonstrate though practical performance the proper technique for removing a 50 lbs fire extinguisher from the bracket and carry to the location of the fire and properly discharge to extinguish the fire.

Possession of a valid Ordinary Seaman Certificate issued by the US Coast Guard.

Necessary Special Qualifications: Possession of a Transportation Worker Identification Credential Card (TWIC) issued by the Transportation Security Administration (TSA).
