Job summary

UTMB Health is seeking a motivated Federal Work Study student to support the Old Red Medical Museum in Galveston, working with historical biological collections and museum operations. The role offers hands-on experience in inventory, labeling, and research under guidance from the Curator and conservator.

You will be part of a team, representing UTMB at museum events and collaborating with staff and students.

Qualifications

• Must have a Federal Work Study Award and be enrolled in a UTMB degree program
• Excellent organizational and communication skills
• Strong initiative, attention to detail, and time management

Responsibilities

• Collections inventory: Undertake an inventory of the historical collections and update the records in the museum's database. (guidance provided)
• Collections organization: Assist in numbering and labeling to improve the organization of the collections. Supplement database information by adding historical contextual sources.
• Historical research: Undertake research on the history of medicine at UTMB (e.g., Truman G. Blocker, Jr. History of Medicine Collections, Moody Medical Library).
• University representation: Serve as an ambassador for UTMB, the museum and Old Red. Demonstrating professionalism during all museum events.
• Team collaboration: Work effectively with museum staff, the UTMB community and visitors alike
• An interest in history/the history of medicine/Galveston's history
• Experience working independently and collaboratively to meet deadlines
