Job description

Federal Construction Assistant Project Manager

Location: Columbia, South Carolina Metro Area

Primary Project Sites: Fort Jackson, Shaw Air Force Base, and McEntire Joint National Guard Base

Travel: Regional travel required based on project awards

Achuti LLC, an award-winning design-build and construction firm serving federal and military clients, is seeking a Federal Construction Assistant Project Manager to support projects throughout South Carolina and the surrounding region.

This position combines construction field operations with project administration, technical computer proficiency, and professional customer communication. The successful candidate must be comfortable working at active construction sites while also preparing polished project documentation, managing electronic records, editing PDFs, tracking submittals, and communicating with subcontractors and government representatives.

The position will be based in the Columbia, South Carolina, metropolitan area and primarily support projects at Fort Jackson, Shaw Air Force Base in Sumter, and McEntire Joint National Guard Base. Regional travel to other project locations, such as Charlotte and surrounding markets, will be required as Achuti receives additional project awards.

This position will report to Achuti’s South Carolina-based Senior Project Managers and work closely with field superintendents, subcontractors, vendors, government representatives, and internal administrative personnel.

Responsibilities

Responsibilities will be assigned based on the selected candidate’s experience and may include:

  • Assist Senior Project Managers with the planning, coordination, execution, and closeout of federal and military construction projects.
  • Support daily field operations and help coordinate subcontractors, vendors, material deliveries, site access, inspections, and project schedules.
  • Maintain regular visibility at active project sites and help identify field conflicts, changing conditions, quality concerns, and schedule risks.
  • Prepare, edit, organize, and distribute professional project correspondence, reports, meeting minutes, field updates, and customer-facing documents.
  • Create, review, combine, edit, annotate, and manage PDF documents, construction drawings, specifications, forms, and supporting exhibits.
  • Prepare and maintain submittal packages, submittal registers, requests for information, transmittals, logs, and other project-control documents.
  • Review drawings, specifications, scopes of work, schedules, and contract requirements to help ensure project compliance.
  • Track project documentation, including submittals, RFIs, change requests, daily reports, inspection records, progress photographs, delivery records, and closeout materials.
  • Communicate professionally with subcontractors, vendors, government contracting personnel, facility representatives, and other customer points of contact.
  • Assist with subcontractor coordination, scope clarification, proposal requests, pricing documentation, and follow-up.
  • Support project meetings by preparing agendas, recording action items, distributing meeting minutes, and tracking outstanding requirements.
  • Assist with project schedules, progress updates, look-ahead plans, and internal status reporting.
  • Support quality-control and safety documentation, including preparatory meetings, inspections, testing records, and corrective-action tracking.
  • Help assemble project write-ups, past-performance information, technical narratives, and other materials for company proposals and customer requests.
  • Assist with project closeout, including punch lists, warranties, operation and maintenance manuals, as-built drawings, training records, and final documentation.
  • Support multiple regional projects or short-duration assignments as company needs require.
Technical and Communication Expectations

This position requires stronger computer, documentation, and communication capabilities than a traditional field-only construction role. The selected candidate should be able to:

  • Work proficiently within Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, and Teams.
  • Edit, combine, organize, annotate, and format PDF documents using Adobe Acrobat, Bluebeam, or similar software.
  • Produce clear, accurate, and professionally formatted project reports, emails, meeting minutes, logs, and customer correspondence.
  • Learn and effectively use cloud-based document-management, scheduling, and construction project-management platforms.
  • Organize electronic project files using consistent naming, version-control, and record-retention practices.
  • Communicate confidently and professionally with subcontractors, field personnel, senior leadership, and government customer representatives.
  • Translate field information into accurate written updates and actionable project documentation.
  • Manage multiple priorities and deadlines while maintaining attention to detail.
Qualifications

Achuti will consider candidates with varying levels of experience. Minimum and preferred qualifications include:

  • Relevant experience in construction project coordination, field supervision, project engineering, assistant project management, manufacturing operations, facilities maintenance, or a related technical environment.
  • Previous federal or military construction experience is strongly preferred but not required.
  • Demonstrated proficiency with Microsoft Office and PDF editing software is required.
  • Strong written communication, professional correspondence, documentation, and organizational skills are required.
  • Field experience and a practical understanding of construction methods, sequencing, materials, safety, and quality control are strongly preferred.
  • Ability to read or develop proficiency in reading construction drawings, specifications, scopes of work, schedules, and technical documents.
  • Ability to coordinate effectively with subcontractors, vendors, field personnel, project managers, and customer representatives.
  • Strong judgment, follow-through, problem-solving skills, and attention to detail.
  • Ability to balance office-based project administration with regular work at active construction sites.
  • Willingness and ability to travel to regional project sites as required.
  • Ability to satisfy federal installation access, background-screening, and identification requirements.
  • Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation are required.

An associate or bachelor’s degree in construction management, engineering, business, or a related discipline is preferred but not required. Relevant construction experience, military experience, technical training, and demonstrated capabilities may be considered in place of formal education.

Credentials such as OSHA training, USACE Construction Quality Management certification, First Aid/CPR, or other construction-related certifications are preferred. Achuti may provide training and professional-development opportunities based on the selected candidate’s needs.

Position Structure

We will tailor the position’s responsibilities, compensation, and level of authority to the successful applicant’s experience, technical skills, field knowledge, and demonstrated ability to manage project documentation and professional communications.
