Job description

Puzzle Group, LLC (DenverDivorce.com) is hiring one associate with two to five years of family law experience. The founding partner will mentor this attorney personally, in a firm that is deliberately staying small. We are extremely selective and will hire only when we find the right person. For that person, this is a genuine path to partnership and, over time, leadership of the practice.

See our work at DenverDivorce.com (Colorado) and puzzlegroup.com (Wyoming).

REQUIREMENTS FOR CONSIDERATION: You must currently live in the Denver metro area and hold an active Colorado law license in good standing. Applications that do not meet both will not be considered.

AT A GLANCE
  • Location: 385 Inverness Parkway, Suite 420, Greenwood Village, CO 80112
  • Schedule: Full time, hybrid. In office Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday; remote Monday and Friday
  • Experience: 2-5 years of family law; criminal defense experience a plus, not required
  • License: Colorado required; Wyoming admitted, or eligible by UBE score transfer or admission on motion, preferred
  • Salary: $135,000 - $175,000 per year, depending on experience
  • Billable target: 1,400 hours billed and collected per year
  • Apply by: January 15, 2027
ABOUT THE FIRM

We are a small trial firm with offices in Greenwood Village, Colorado and Jackson, Wyoming. We keep the docket small on purpose so every case is prepared as if it will be tried, because the strongest settlements go to the side that is plainly ready not to settle.

Our managing partner, Aaron Herzberg, has practiced since 1995. He spent seventeen years as a founding partner of a California divorce litigation firm, holds an LL.M. in Taxation from Georgetown, has tried more than seventy bench trials, and is AV Preeminent rated. He is admitted in Colorado, Wyoming, California, Texas and the District of Columbia.

The practice has three parts:

  • Colorado family law (DenverDivorce.com): divorce and custody for business owners, executives, professionals and their spouses across the Denver metro courts. Business valuation, equity compensation, maintenance, parenting plans, relocation, modifications and enforcement.
  • Wyoming family law (puzzlegroup.com): divorce, custody and support in Teton, Lincoln and Sublette counties, often involving a business, a ranch or property in more than one state.
  • Criminal defense: DUI, assault and domestic violence, and drug cases in Teton County, plus federal citations from Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks, heard before a U.S. Magistrate Judge in the District of Wyoming.

We invest in technology at the highest subscription tiers: Clio for practice management, Vincent AI and CoCounsel for legal research and drafting, and Claude for analysis and writing. You will work directly with the managing partner every day.

THE ROLE

You will carry a real caseload from intake to final order, mostly Colorado family law, with growing Wyoming and criminal work as you are ready for it. This is a hands‑on associate role in a small firm, not a document‑review seat.

  • Handle Colorado dissolution, allocation of parental responsibilities, maintenance, child support, modification and enforcement matters, from initial client meetings through mediation, hearings and trial.
  • Draft pleadings, motions, sworn financial statements, disclosures, discovery, separation agreements and parenting plans.
  • Appear in Denver‑metro district courts for status conferences, temporary orders hearings and contested hearings, including second‑chairing and then first‑chairing trials.
  • Work with experts on business valuation, equity compensation, tax and income for support.
  • Support Wyoming family law matters in Teton, Lincoln and Sublette counties once admitted there, with many appearances by video.
  • Assist on criminal defense matters, including federal Yellowstone and Grand Teton citations in the District of Wyoming and Teton County criminal cases.
  • Gain occasional exposure to transactional work, including entity, real estate and investment matters for the firm's business clients and its principal's business interests. The role is primarily family law; this is a growth opportunity, not a core duty.
  • Communicate directly and promptly with clients. Our clients have their lawyers' cell numbers, and we answer.
WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR

Required:

  • Current residence in the Denver metro area.
  • Two to five years of family law practice, with your own court appearances and contested hearings.
  • Strong writing. You will submit a writing sample.
  • Comfort with financial documents: tax returns, business financials, pay stubs and brokerage statements.
  • Willingness to practice in both Colorado and Wyoming.

Preferred, not required:

  • Wyoming bar admission, or eligibility to be admitted in Wyoming by UBE score transfer or admission on motion.
  • Criminal defense or prosecution experience, including DUI or federal misdemeanor practice.
  • Trial experience as first or second chair.
  • Experience with Clio, Vincent AI, CoCounsel, Claude or other AI legal tools, and the Colorado JDF forms.
SCHEDULE, PAY AND BENEFITS

The position is full time and hybrid. You work in our Greenwood Village office on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, and from home on Monday and Friday. Court appearances are scheduled as cases require.

Salary: $135,000 - $175,000 per year, based on experience.

Billable hours: an annual target of 1,400 hours billed and collected. Mentoring, training and firm‑building time is on top of that and is expected, not penalized.

  • Top‑tier PPO medical plan, with very low copays, at no cost to you. The firm pays 100% of the employee premium.
  • Dental and vision, also at no cost to you.
  • Toll‑road allowance for your commute to the office if you take the toll road.
  • Three weeks of paid vacation, plus 10 paid holidays.
  • Colorado and Wyoming bar dues and CLE paid by the firm.

Do not include your age, date of birth, or school attendance or graduation dates on your initial application. You may redact them from any documents you send. Puzzle Group is an equal opportunity employer.
