Job description

Job Description - Faculty.Professor.Professor - Full-Time (26006392)

Faculty.Professor.Professor - Full-Time

Med-Office of the Dean - Pennsylvania-Pittsburgh - ( 26006392 )

The School of Medicine at the University of Pittsburgh is seeking full-time faculty at the level of Associate Professor or Professor with tenure or in the tenure stream. Qualified applicants will be a proven leader in bioethics scholarship, with a track record of excellence in empirically grounded and/or conceptual research, extramural funding, and academic, clinical, or policy leadership.

It is anticipated that an endowed chair will be established for this position. All nominations to endowed chairs and professorships to be held by the School of Medicine faculty require review and approval by the standing committee review process. Review is mandatory prior to awarding any endowed chair or professorship.

As Professor or Associate Professor, the incumbent will hold a leadership role within the Institute for Bioethics alongside their appointment in the School of Medicine, to be determined based on applicant qualifications and interest. Core responsibilities include building and sustaining an independent program of bioethics research; contributing to mentorship and teaching within the School of Medicine department as appropriate to background and rank; and directing or co-directing one or more of the Institute's research or educational initiatives, with latitude to propose and launch new programs aligned with the incumbent's expertise. The Institute for Bioethics advances research in bioethics and the health humanities, educates the next generation of clinicians, scholars, and leaders in ethical practice, and fosters a community of interprofessional inquiry addressing pressing ethical challenges in healthcare and research. The Institute is the University's principal hub for bioethics and health humanities scholarship, education, and innovation. Its work spans six initiatives that reach across the University: Ethics Education; Education and Programming for Undergraduates; Health Humanities and Social Sciences; Humanistic Communication and Shared Decision Making; Research Ethics; and Clinical Ethics, each anchored by dedicated faculty leadership and active programming across multiple schools.

We welcome applicants from any relevant disciplinary background. This is a senior appointment at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor. Candidates holding an MD will be expected to be BC/BE (Board Certified/Board Eligible) physicians or physician-scientists. Candidates holding a PhD or equivalent terminal degree in a relevant discipline (e.g., philosophy, bioethics, health policy, law) are strongly encouraged to apply.

Rank-Specific Qualifications

Applicants for Associate Professor should have five or more years of experience in related scientific or scholarly research; have independent, external research funding and a substantial record of peer-reviewed publications in bioethics or a closely related discipline; have significant teaching experience; and demonstrate the capacity for sustained, impactful, and independent scholarly contributions and leadership in bioethics.

Applicants for Professor should have an extensive record of independent, external research funding and a distinguished record of peer-reviewed publications in bioethics or a closely related discipline; have significant teaching, mentoring, and leadership experience; and demonstrate sustained national or international recognition for scholarly contributions to bioethics.
