Qualifications

Responsibilities

  • Provide individualized learning support and regular meetings.
  • Collaborate with students, families, and faculty to remove barriers to success.
  • Advise faculty on student learning needs and effective classroom strategies.
  • Communicate progress to families and guide routines for home support.
  • Participate on the Student Support Team (SST) for planning next steps.
  • Read psychoeducational/neuropsychological evaluations to develop IAPs.
  • Assist with implementing accommodations and Upper School Testing Center processes.
  • Fulfill other duties to support the Upper School.

Job description

The Long-Term Substitute Upper School Learning Specialist (Grades 9-12) is a full-time faculty position from December 2026 through May 2027. The substitute Learning Specialist will work closely with students, families, faculty, and additional administrators in delivering learning support services and providing individualized student support through a coaching model.Student Support & ConsultationManage a caseload of about 25-30 Upper School students, providing individualized learning support through use of a coaching model in regularly scheduled meetings based on student needMonitor and serve as an as-needed resource for additional Upper School students with identified learning differences and/or acute academic needs, providing responsive support as appropriatePartner with students, faculty, and families to identify barriers to academic success, develop practical strategies, and build skills necessary for success in and beyond schoolServe as a resource and thought partner for faculty regarding student learning needs and effective strategies for supporting students in the classroomCommunicate with families regarding student progress and provide guidance around structures, routines, and strategies that can support student independence and academic success at homeParticipate, as needed, on the Student Support Team (SST), collaborating with other team members to identify appropriate next steps for students experiencing academic difficultyRead and interpret psychoeducational and neuropsychological evaluations to develop and implement Individual Academic Plans (IAPs) for studentsAssist with the implementation of academic and testing accommodations, including responsibilities related to the Upper School Testing CenterAssume other duties and responsibilities as needed to support the Upper SchoolBachelor’s degree required; master’s degree in special education or related field preferredAt least 3 years prior experience in the field of learning support, special education, academic support, or a related fieldThorough knowledge and experience working with students with ADHD and other learning differences and disabilities in an ambitious academic curriculumDemonstrated ability to read and interpret learning evaluations such as psychoeducational and neuropsychological reports and generate academic plans based on testingExperience using a coaching model to support students is preferredEffective communication skills that promote positive relationships with students, families and colleaguesBelieve deeply in a mission of fostering an inclusive learning community where all voices and viewpoints are valued and academic diversity is recognizedStrong work ethic, exceptional attention to detail, and high level of integrityProficiency with the Google Suite applications (Docs, Sheets, Classroom) is strongly preferredFamiliarity with independent schools is preferredIn striving to fulfill its mission, The Potomac School seeks candidates of diverse backgrounds who embody our core values of courage, integrity, humility, perseverance, and respect.
