Job description

The Wistar Institute is a world leader in early-stage discovery science in the areas of cancer, immunology, and infectious disease. Wistar is committed to accelerating research advances from bench to bedside through brilliant science and distinctive approaches to collaboration among scientific investigators and academic and industry partners. Wistar’s dynamic environment supports the advancement of discoveries that will change the future of human health.

The Wistar Institute is seeking outstanding faculty candidates in the new Center for Advanced Therapeutics (CAT) to bridge foundational discovery research with small molecule drug discovery. Candidates at the Assistant, Associate and full Professor level will be considered.

We are seeking a highly productive academic and/or biopharma trained investigator with research interests in academic drug discovery including the broad areas of chemical biology, medicinal chemistry, structure-based design, computational chemistry and/or target identification. The ideal candidate will hold a PhD in synthetic organic chemistry and/or medicinal chemistry and have demonstrated, through peer-reviewed publications, the ability to design, synthesize, and utilize small molecule regents to probe interesting biological questions including the successful demonstration of the synthesis of novel small molecule probes to further the mechanistic understanding of biological processes. This may include experience in medicinal chemistry and the demonstrated ability to define structure activity relationships utilizing biochemical and cell-based assays to determine affinity, understanding physiochemical properties, and the ability to define selectivity for a chemical series. Applicants who have a trajectory toward or have established independent research supported by extramural funding are of high priority. The successful candidate is expected to establish an independent, externally funded research program and actively pursue grant support to sustain and grow their laboratory. A strong publication record demonstrating impactful research and scientific leadership will be critical for success in this role.

The Wistar Institute is an exceptional institute for advancing a career in research. It is among the most accomplished U.S. institutes in the areas of translational vaccine/biologic research. The Wistar Institute is the nation’s first independent biomedical research Institute with long-standing NCI Cancer Center designation. It has a strong technology transfer focus for biomedical research. The Institute offers a highly competitive start-up package in addition to an outstanding and interactive collaborative research environment.

The Institute offers a state-of-the-art vivarium and access to outstanding core facilities in proteomics and metabolomics, genomics, microscopy, high-throughput molecular screening, spatial transcriptomics, medicinal chemistry, bioinformatics, flow cytometry, and humanized mouse models, among others. The Institute’s location is in the University City area of Philadelphia, PA and is adjacent to the campuses of the University of Pennsylvania, Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, and Drexel University, providing an exceptional work environment for vigorous academic and clinical collaborations. Wistar is a very attractive destination for training opportunities for undergraduate, graduate students, and postdoctoral fellows.

Applications will be reviewed as received and will be accepted until the position is filled. To ensure timely consideration, applications will be reviewed using a rolling format. The application should include: a curriculum vitae, a summary of past and future research interests (no more than 3 pages), and history of accomplishments, talks and research funding support (as applicable). Applications (submitted as a single PDF) should be sent by e-mail to: Maria Colelli, Faculty Search Coordinator, (mcolelli@wistar.org), The Wistar Institute, 3601 Spruce Street, Philadelphia, PA 19104.
