Faculty, Korean

This position is a Korean teaching role with opportunities to teach additional languages offered within the department if SACSCOC credentialing criteria are met. Faculty prepare and deliver engaging, innovative coursework aligned with the ACTFL World-Readiness Standards. A successful candidate will bring strong communication skills, a collaborative spirit, and a commitment to student success in an environment that promotes belonging for all. This position begins in August 2027.

Job Summary

The World Languages Department offers credit courses across 10 languages of instruction leading to an Associate of Arts degree in both on-campus and online formats. Recognized for excellence, our department has earned an “Exemplary” assessment rating for 10 consecutive years and is home to several award-winning faculty members. Our faculty actively engage in innovative practices in language pedagogy, second-language acquisition, and multifaceted linguistic, with opportunities to participate in service learning and global learning experiences, including study abroad. Above all, advancing a deep appreciation and understanding of global cultures remains a foundational commitment of our department.

Principal Responsibilities and Duties
  • Prepare and teach courses in the field of Korean language to a multicultural student population based on the department's approved course learning outcomes, utilizing a variety of instructional strategies appropriate to the needs of community college students and the standards of the discipline.
  • Participate actively in departmental responsibilities and departmental governance, including curriculum review and revision, program review, assessment of student learning outcomes at the course and program level, and other departmental activities.
  • Administer and evaluate departmental Course Challenge Exams in Korean and maintain and revise Course Challenge Exam materials to ensure alignment with departmental curriculum and learning outcomes.
  • Evaluate student progress and provide clear, timely feedback reflecting program learning outcomes and departmental expectations.
  • Serve as a mentor to students in the Korean program.
  • Provide teaching and mentoring services to students in a manner which does not discriminate based on race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, disability, age, protected veteran status, political affiliation, or other protected categories.
  • Remain current in the field through a variety of professional development activities.
  • Support division and department goals through active and collegial engagement in decision-making and unit-level planning.
  • Serve on collegewide and departmental committees, councils, work groups, and task forces.
  • Perform other related tasks as assigned by the department chair, dean, and/or associate vice chancellor, vice chancellor, executive vice chancellor.
Professional Standards

  • Meet deadlines for attendance certification and submission of final course grades.
  • Participate in graduation, general assembly, and other official college functions.
  • Maintain regular office hours to assist students and improve student retention and success.

  • Comply with published college policies and procedures and meet professional standards for teaching in a community college.
Technology
  • Demonstrated proficiency using computer applications, online resources, and other technologies for the classroom.
  • Demonstrated proficiency using an online learning management system such as Blackboard to develop and build course content and perform administrative duties (posting office hours, syllabi, etc.).
Required Education

Master’s degree in Korean, or Master’s degree with 18 graduate hours in Korean. In accordance with Southern Association of College and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) requirements. SACSCOC requirements may differ depending on the courses taught within the discipline.

Preferred Education
  • In addition to meeting the required education qualifications in Korean, a minimum of 18 graduate semester hours in one of the following languages is preferred: Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Latin, Russian, or Spanish.

  • Documented experience with active and applied teaching and learning methodologies.
  • A strong commitment to teaching in a community college setting, including teaching practices that reflect an understanding of the multicultural classroom and the benefits of cultural awareness and sensitivity in the classroom and the workplace.

  • Ability to communicate effectively with students with a wide range of skills and backgrounds.

  • Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, ability to maintain an established schedule, including evenings and weekends, including possible multiple campus locations that may vary by semester.

  • Understanding of what it means to teach in a community college environment that serves often underprepared and underserved students.
Working Conditions

Work is routinely performed in an office/classroom environment. Subject to standing, walking, sitting, bending, reaching, kneeling, pushing, and pulling. Ability to lift up to 10 pounds. Work safely and follow safety rules. Report unsafe working conditions and behavior. Take reasonable and prudent actions to prevent others from engaging in unsafe practices.

Salary

Salary Range $71,270 - $96,596 (Based on a 10.5-month contract to start Fall 2027)
