Job summary

California State University, Long Beach (CSULB) invites applications for an Assistant Professor of Consumer Affairs in the College of Health and Human Services. The position will begin in Fall 2027 with an academic-year salary range and a strong commitment to student success.

The appointee will teach courses such as personal and financial management, mentor students, participate in program development, and pursue scholarly activities. A Ph.D./Ed.D.

Qualifications

  • Ph.D. or Ed.D. in Consumer Affairs, Business, Economics, Family and Consumer Sciences, or a closely related field with at least one graduate degree in a consumer affairs related field or official certification to complete the doctoral degree by August 1, 2027.
  • Specialization in consumer affairs, consumer protection, personal finance, consumer advocacy, housing issues, resource management, or closely related field.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and/or work experience in the Family and Consumer Sciences discipline or equivalent.
  • Demonstrated potential for successful teaching at the college level.
  • Demonstrated potential to develop and sustain a productive line of research.
  • Active participation in professional organizations related to the profession.
  • Demonstrated commitment to working successfully with a diverse student population, including low socioeconomic and first-generation students.

Responsibilities

  • Teach courses in personal and financial management, consumer life skills, housing in a global perspective, family and consumer resource management, consumer dynamics, consumer protection, and internship.
  • Mentor and advise students.
  • Participate as a faculty advisor for a student group.
  • Participate in curriculum and program development and keep content current.
  • Serve on theses/directed project committees.
  • Engage in scholarly and/or creative activities leading to publications and presentations.
  • Participate in committee responsibilities at program, department, college, and university levels.
  • Engage with advisory boards for the program and partner institutions.
