Job summary

Oxford Instruments Asylum Research in Santa Barbara, CA is seeking a hands-on Factory Service Engineer to support AFM systems, repairs, troubleshooting, and continual improvement of advanced AFM equipment.

The role partners with Production, Test, Engineering, and other teams to diagnose complex issues, restore equipment to specification, and deliver reliable solutions that minimize customer downtime. Strong documentation and customer communication are essential.

Qualifications

• 5+ years hands-on experience in electrical, mechanical, scientific, or precision instrumentation work.
• Ability to interpret schematics, drawings, specifications, and procedures.
• Experience using diagnostic tools such as DMMs and oscilloscopes.
• Strong analytical problem-solving with methodical fault isolation.
• Clear written and verbal communication with customers and teams.

Responsibilities

• Diagnose, troubleshoot, repair, and test AFM systems, subassemblies, electronics, mechanical assemblies, and accessories.
• Perform fault isolation using schematics, documentation, and test equipment.
• Complete preventive maintenance, calibration, upgrades, refurbishment, and verification testing.
• Document troubleshooting steps, repairs, parts used, test results in service records.
• Collaborate with Engineering, Manufacturing, Quality, Applications, and field service teams.
