Job summary

SUNY Plattsburgh is seeking a Facility Operations Assistant 2 (Grounds) to lead the Grounds Maintenance team, coordinate daily activities, and ensure safe, high-quality outdoor campus care. The role combines hands-on grounds duties with supervisory responsibilities to support campus appearance, safety, and operations.

Responsibilities include mowing, landscaping, seasonal snow removal, and equipment maintenance, with the chance to manage staff and schedules.

Qualifications

• One year as Facility Operations Assistant 1 (Grounds); OR two years of grounds maintenance experience.
• Must obtain pesticide/herbicide license within six months of appointment.
• Ability to understand and carry out written and/or oral instructions.
• Ability to work overtime.
• Physically able to perform the tasks of the position.
• Demonstrated ability to work effectively with a variety of individuals.
• When required to operate motor vehicles, a valid driver’s license and the ability to be LENS cleared to operate state vehicles.

Grounds Maintenance is dedicated to maintaining the natural beauty of our 265-acre campus completing routine maintenance for a variety of surfaces and areas. Facility Operations Assistant 2 (Grounds) will be responsible for the effective direction of Facility Operations Assistants 1, and/or other grounds, custodial, maintenance crew, or temporary staff including providing work assignments based on priorities set by management, and ensuring schedules, standards and guidelines are met. The role combines hands‑on grounds maintenance responsibilities with leadership duties to support the appearance, safety, and functionality of campus grounds and outdoor facilities. We are part of the Administration & Finance division and provide essential services to our campus, local, state, federal and international customers. We navigate systems in a collaborative and sensitive way to assist the University in achieving its educational mission. This position is expected to work Monday-Friday, 6:00am – 2:30pm.

Examples of Duties & Responsibilities:

This position coordinates daily grounds activities, assigns and monitors work, ensures safe and efficient operations, and assists in the administration of the grounds program. Maintenance of written records of work performed, labor and materials used, and reporting to the supervisor on the progress of projects is included. Working both within a crew and alone, this position is responsible for the maintenance and upkeep of campus grounds, athletic fields, and outdoor recreational facilities through activities such as mowing, landscaping, planting, pruning, weed control, and pesticide application under the supervision of a certified applicator. Performs seasonal duties including snow and ice removal through shoveling, plowing, and snow blowing, as well as minor repairs such as blacktop patching and tree maintenance. Ensures grounds equipment, tools, and vehicles are properly maintained and operated in a safe and efficient manner. Using appropriate PPE and selecting and safely using the appropriate tools and equipment needed to complete assigned tasks, as well as attending job‑related training, is required. Activities and assignments vary based on seasonal and weather‑related conditions. Early morning, evening, weekend, overtime, and emergency recall work may be required to meet operational needs.

Non-competitive

• One year of service as a Facility Operations Assistant 1 (Grounds); OR, two years of experience and/or training in grounds maintenance work.
• Required to obtain appropriate license or certification to apply pesticides, herbicides, and other treatments, within six months of appointment.
• Ability to understand and carry out written and/or oral instructions
