Responsibilities

  • Perform routine unskilled and semiskilled manual tasks related to operation and maintenance of state-owned buildings and facilities and surrounding grounds.
  • Supervise or assist in supervising other grounds/custodial/maintenance crew; plan priorities, assign work, ensure schedules and standards are met.
  • Maintain grounds including mowing, pruning, weed control, and seasonal snow/ice removal; perform or supervise use of hand and power tools and equipment.
  • Keep written records of work performed and materials used; report progress to supervisor; participate in landscaping planning and estimates.

This position is designated as Essential Service, therefore the successful applicant is designated as an essential service employee. The campus has high reoccurring need to respond to urgent facilities needs outside of regular scheduled hours. Employees in this position may be called in or assigned to work outside of their regular scheduled shift when operational circumstances require. Flexibility and availability to respond to these needs are essential functions of the position.

Brief Job Description

Facility Operations Assistants perform a variety of routine unskilled and semiskilled manual tasks related to the operation and maintenance of State owned buildings and facilities, the surrounding grounds, and the vehicles and equipment used in maintaining these sites.

Performs the duties of Facility Operations Assistants 1. Working both with a crew and alone, this position may supervise Facility Operations Assistants 1, or other grounds, custodial, or maintenance crew, providing work assignments based on priorities set by management, ensuring schedules, standards and guidelines are met. Maintains written records of work performed and labor and materials used; reports orally to the supervisor on the progress of projects under way.

Is responsible for the upkeep of campus grounds including but not limited to, mowing lawns using proper equipment; management of trees, shrubbery, plants, and flowers, including the pulling of weeds; spraying of pesticides under the supervision of a certified applicator; and maintaining outdoor athletic and recreational facilities. In the winter, duties are expected to include shoveling, plowing, and snow blowing of snow which requires the proper and safe use of multiple types of equipment and vehicles.

Ensuring the proper maintenance of grounds equipment is also necessary. As illustrated, it is important to note that the activities and tasks assigned will vary according to the season and daily weather conditions. Evening and weekend work are also expected and may be required based on operational need.

Performs the full range of supervisory duties such as approving leave; tracking time and attendance; identifying staff development needs; evaluating staff performance; and completing performance evaluations. May use and operate a variety of hand and power tools and motorized equipment including self‑propelled and stationary machinery. May plan or assist in the planning of landscaping and other grounds projects by preparing rough sketches and schedules, and estimates of labor, materials and equipment.

Working Environment: The position requires frequent heavy lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling of materials or objects weighing approximately 50–80 pounds. Employees must regularly climb, stoop, bend, twist, and perform other physically strenuous movements throughout the workday.

The job also requires working outdoors in all types of weather conditions, including exposure to heat, cold, rain, snow, and wind. Employees may have considerable exposure to environmental conditions such as dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, odors, and loud or potentially disruptive noises.

Required Qualifications

Non-competitive: one year of service as a Facility Operations Assistant 1 or Motor Vehicle Operator; OR, two years of full‑time, verifiable experience in custodial, grounds, or maintenance operation or assisting in a journey‑level trade. When required to operate motor vehicles, incumbents must possess a valid New York State driver’s license appropriate for the type of vehicle being operated. Will be enrolled in The New York License Event Notification Service and must be LENS cleared to operate state vehicles. Ability to understand and carry out written and/or oral instructions. Physically able to perform the tasks of the position including, but not limited to, those in the Examples of Duties & Responsibilities. A demonstrated ability to work effectively and collegially with a variety of individuals.
