Job summary

SUNY Cortland is seeking a Facility Operations Assistant 1 to perform cleaning and maintenance in residence halls and campus buildings. You will help create a safe, clean learning and working environment, with responsibilities in general cleaning, furniture setup, and basic maintenance.

Schedule is Monday through Friday, 6:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Salary is $36,232, with competitive benefits and opportunities for training and professional development.

Qualifications

• No education or experience requirements for this position.
• Must possess a valid New York State Driver’s License.
• Physical strength and agility are required to lift/carry/work on ladders and maintenance equipment.

Responsibilities

• General cleaning of carpets, floors, and restrooms using cleaning tools and equipment.
• Move furniture and equipment for cleaning and events, and set up rooms as needed.
• Clean high fixtures and replace bulbs using ladders or lifts.
• Assist with snow removal, lawn care, and basic maintenance tasks in summer/winter.
• Identify hazards and report safety issues to supervisors.

Position Summary

The facility operations assistant primarily performs the duties ofa cleaner, which include cleaning and maintaining assigned areaswithin residence halls and academic and administrative buildings,which contributes to creating a safe and clean learning and workenvironment. Additionally, on a limited basis, the facilityoperations assistant may assist in snow removal, lawn caremaintenance, event setup, and maintenance-related duties such aspainting, furniture repair, and helping maintenancetechnicians.

Major Responsibilities

General Cleaning

• Use mops, brushes, detergents, buffers, floor scrubbers, andother cleaning implements to wash, wax, vacuum, and shampoocarpets, floors, corridors, stairs and stairwells, walls,partitions, windows from the inside of buildings, etc.
• Collect trash and recyclables from offices, centralized trashlocations, designated trash rooms and dormitories, and transport tothe exterior dumpster.
• Use hand-dusting equipment to dust assigned areas.
• Use hand-operated equipment and detergents to scrub and cleanall areas of lavatories, such as sinks, showers, urinals, toilets,etc.
• Use designated equipment to polish wood and metal fixtures andequipment.
• Assist with cleaning for absent employees as directed orassigned.

Furniture Coordination and Event Support

• Move furniture and equipment in connection with cleaning andcare functions.
• Move furniture within the building for office moves.
• Set up furniture and equipment in assigned areas, such asathletic fields, gymnasiums, and conference or meeting rooms, asneeded.

Lighting and High Areas

• Use appropriate equipment such as ladders and aerial lifts toclean light fixtures and replace light bulbs in high places.

Maintenance and Grounds

• Remove snow and salt sidewalks or stairs adjacent to theassigned building entrance.
• Use manual and/or mechanical equipment to occasionally cleansidewalks, yards, and driveways.
• Weed garden beds adjacent to the assigned building in summermonths.
• Assist maintenance with basic maintenance during summer/winterto include painting within dormitories.

Safety and Hazard Removal

• For all assigned tasks, pick up and remove any hazardous itemsfrom floors and furniture, and place them in designated receptaclesor appropriate locations.
• Notify supervisor of any safety hazard that cannot be mitigatedon site.

Functional and Supervisory Relationships

• This position reports to one of the Supervising Janitors.

Required Qualifications

• There are no education or experience requirements for thisposition. This position is a labor class position and as such isnot subject to selection on the basis of seniority. Selection ofthe candidates shall be at the campus’s discretion from among thosewho apply.

• Applicants must possess a valid New York State Driver’s Licenseappropriate for the type of vehicle operated.

• Physical strength and agility are required to lift/carry/workon ladders, power hand tools, and maintenance equipment. Must beable to work on scaffolding and knees. Working conditions mayinclude working at heights and in confined spaces.

Preferred Qualifications

Previous cleaning and/or labor type work experience preferred.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

• Ability to safely use hand tools and motorized equipment suchas floor buffers, vacuums, lawnmowers, and snow blowers.
• Ability to lift, push, pull, and carry objects weighing up to50 lbs.
• Ability to understand and carry out both verbal and simplewritten instructions.
• Ability to identify and report defects, hazards, or dangerousconditions to supervisors.
