Job summary

North Slope Borough seeks a versatile maintenance technician to perform plumbing, electrical, carpentry, HVAC, and grounds upkeep across facilities. The role includes preventative maintenance, safety compliance, and basic repairs with on-call duties and occasional travel.

Responsibilities include inspecting systems, performing repairs, operating power tools, and ensuring safety standards are met. The position may involve non-traditional hours, including evenings and weekends, as needed.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required or an equivalent combination of education and work experience.
• Three years of combined work experience in carpentry, mechanical, electrical, and/or plumbing.
• Must be 21 years of age and able to pass background checks and pre-employment screenings.
• Ability to obtain CPR, AED, and Basic First Aid within 6 months of hire and OSHA 10 within 6 months.

• Maintain and repair physical structures as needed.
• Use power tools to perform basic carpentry, electrical, mechanical, air conditioning, plumbing and other repairs.

• Perform janitorial duties on the grounds and in the facility.
• May be subject to 24 hour on-call status and travel as needed.

Summary or Purpose

Perform a wide variety of maintenance work at facilities and grounds which includes routine maintenance, plumbing, mechanical, carpentry and electrical. Also assists with preventative maintenance such as flooring and/or ceiling work, door and/or window replacement/repair, painting, roofing, fire protection, plumbing, mechanical, carpentry and electrical.

• Maintain and repair HVAC, Plumbing, Electrical and Security and Fire Suppression Systems.
• Maintain and repair physical structures as needed.
• Use power tools and other departmental equipment to perform basic carpentry, electrical, mechanical, air conditioning, plumbing and/or other repairs and maintenance.
• Inspect facilities, equipment and grounds for necessary repairs, improvements, or preventative maintenance.
• Comply with all safety standards.
• Perform janitorial duties on the grounds and in the facility.
• Perform duties as assigned by the work order(s) received.
• Perform other duties as assigned.
• May be subject to 24 hour on-call status.
• Will be required to travel as needed.
• Protect self, co-workers and consumers by following policies and procedures to prevent the spread of blood borne and/or airborne diseases. (Public Works Only)
• Within NSB Health Facilities and NSB Itinerate Quarters, respect clients and/or tenants by recognizing their rights and maintaining confidentiality, including HIPPA requirements. (Public Works Only)
• Will be required to work a non-traditional work schedule to include evening, holidays, and weekends. (Public Works Only)

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of North Slope Borough organization, operations, policies and procedure

Education, Experience, Certifications and Licenses Required

• Highschool Graduate or G.E.D/or, a combination of 12 years of education and work related experience;
• Three years of combined work experience in carpentry, mechanical, electrical, and/or plumbing;
• Valid Alaska Driver's License that meets North Slope Borough insurance criteria;
• Must be 21 years or age;
• Ability to pass a thorough personal-history investigation of the person to determine character traits and habits indicative of moral character (Police Only);
• Ability to pass a criminal background check conducted by the State of Alaska Background Check Unit (Public Works Only);
• Documentation that the individual is free from active pulmonary tuberculosis (Public Works Only);
• Ability to obtain CPR, AED, and Basic First Aid Certifications within 6 months of hire.
• Ability to obtain OSHA 10 Hour Certification within 6 months of hire.
• Ability to obtain site specific Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) training in accordance with 40 C.F.R. § 265.16 within the probationary period.
• Ability to obtain Hazardous Waste and Emergency Response (HAZWOPER) current certification within the probationary period.
• Ability to obtain Small Quantity Handler training in accordance with 40 C.F.R. § 273.16 within the probationary period;
• Ability to obtain site specific Spill Prevention, Control, and Countermeasure (SPCC) training in accordance with 40 C.F.R. 112.7 (f)(1)(2) and (3) within the probationary period.
