North Slope Borough is seeking a Heavy Equipment Mechanic Trainee to support the Fire Department in maintaining and repairing fire equipment and apparatus in Alaska. Responsibilities include inspections, preventative maintenance, minor and major repairs, and diagnostic work.
You may travel to borough villages and participate in safety trainings. The role requires a high school diploma or GED and the ability to obtain state certifications within two years; valid Alaska driver license is needed.
To gain the skills, knowledge and experience necessary to Service, Diagnose and Repair light, medium and heavy duty fire equipment and apparatus. Perform Minor and Major repairs to include over hauling engines, drive train, hydraulic systems and electrical systems.

Knowledge of NSB Fire Department policies and procedures, firefighting and emergency services techniques and procedures, and related safety and legal issues.
Skill in effectively diagnosing and troubleshooting maintenance and repairs on Fire Department vehicles and equipment.
High school graduate or G.E.D/or, a combination of 12 years of education and related work experience.
Ability to obtain certification as State of Alaska Firefighter I and Emergency Trauma Technician within two years of appointment.
Valid Alaska Drivers License that meets North Slope Borough insurance criteria.
Ability to obtain site specific Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) training in accordance with 40 C.F.R
Ability to obtain Hazardous Waste and Emergency Response (HAZWOPER) current certification within the probationary period.
Ability to obtain Small Quantity Handler training in accordance with 40 C.F.R.
Ability to obtain site specific Spill Prevention, Control, and Countermeasure (SPCC) training in accordance with 40 C.F.R. 112.7 (f)(1)(2) and (3) within probationary period.
Work is performed in internal and external environments with exposure to inclement weather and varying temperatures.
May be exposed to infectious diseases, hazardous materials, dangerous machinery and potential physical harm when responding to fire and rescue emergencies.
Emergency response vehicles, specialized fire department and personal protective equipment, rescue equipment and emergency medical tools and gear; also specialized repair tools and equipment.
