Job summary

NMSU in Las Cruces is seeking a Facilities Technician to install, repair, and maintain locks, keys, and access control systems across campus. You will re-key and issue keys while supporting master key systems to ensure safety and secure campus operations.

The role is full-time, non-exempt, with a standard M-F schedule (8-5). A high school diploma or higher is required; AFSCME bargaining unit applies. The position offers $16.83 hourly and a 1.0 FTE commitment.

Qualifications

• High School diploma or higher is required.
• Preferred: ability to cut and issue keys, re-key, install and repair locks and hardware.
• Experience interpreting and maintaining master key systems.
• Ability to use hand and power tools relevant to the trade.
• Ability to read, understand, and enforce safety procedures.

Responsibilities

• Install, maintain and repair structural building systems.
• Perform non-technical maintenance on mechanical systems and electrical systems in campus buildings.
• Inspect and test emergency egress lighting, switches, outlets, photocells, and lighting fixtures.
• Maintain plumbing systems including domestic water, wastewater, and natural gas components.

Job Duties and Responsibilities: Perform installation, maintenance and/or repairs on structural building systems. Performs non-technical maintenance tasks on the mechanical systems inside of campus buildings. Building mechanical systems include the piping and individual components for heating, ventilation, and air conditioning. Performs non-technical maintenance tasks on the electrical systems inside of buildings. Non-technical maintenancetasks include but are not limited to routine inspection and testing of emergency egress lighting, switches, outlets, photocells. This also includes changing light bulbs and light fixtures. Performs non-technical maintenance tasks on the plumbing systems inside of campus buildings. Building plumbing systems includes all components and fixtures associated with the domestic water, wastewater, and natural gas systems located inside of the building.

Qualifications

Required Education and Experience: High School diploma or higher degree.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Ability to cut and issue keys, re-key, install and repair locks and hardware.


• Ability to interpret, implement, and maintain pre-defined master key systems;


• Ability to use hand and power tools applicable to trade.


• Ability to make administrative/procedural decisions and judgments.


• Ability to install, troubleshoot, and repair both mechanical locking and electronic access control device.


• Ability to read, understand, follow, and enforce safety procedures.

Working Conditions and Physical Effort

Environment: Work involves almost constant exposure to unusual elements: i.e. extreme temp, toxic chemicals, biohazardous materials, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, loud noises, other potentially dangerous materials/situations that require safety precaution/protective equip

Physical Effort: Considerable physical activity. Physical work is a primary part (more than 70%) of the job.

Lifting Requirements: Requires heavy physical work; heavy lifting, pushing, or pulling required of objects up to 50 pounds.

Risk: Work environment involves exposure to potentially dangerous materials and situations that require following extensive safety precautions and may include the use of protective equipment.
