Job summary

Indiana University Health is seeking a Facilities Supervisor to lead the new Central Utility Plant in Downtown Indianapolis. The role is on-site, Monday–Friday, and involves managing boilers, chillers, steam and hot water distribution, and coordinating a skilled maintenance team to support a 900-bed campus.

The ideal candidate has prior Central Utility Plant or powerhouse experience, supervisory background, and a commitment to preventive maintenance and asset management.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required; an associate degree in a related field is preferred.
• Valid driver’s license required.
• Experience leading teams and 5+ years in HVAC, plumbing, electrical or other utility systems.
• Knowledge of NFPA Life Safety Code and OSHA requirements.

Responsibilities

• Plan, coordinate and supervise operation and maintenance of buildings and grounds.
• Organize work, estimate labor needs and delegate tasks to technicians.
• Schedule preventive maintenance and repairs on mechanical and electrical equipment.
• Train technicians using manuals, work orders and blueprints.
• Assist with maintenance calls, troubleshooting and repairs of utility systems.

Candidate Qualifications

• High School Diploma or GED Required. Associate's Degree in applicable discipline preferred.
• Requires a valid driver’s license.
• Requires advanced knowledge of specialized areas including electrical secondary systems, plumbing systems, fire system devices, air systems and HVAC related systems.
• Requires ability to read and interpret information from complex blueprints, schematics and diagrams.
• Requires an in depth knowledge of hazardous material management, NFPA Life Safety Code, State Fire Marshall and NFPA 99 requirements.
• Requires comprehensive understanding of codes and regulations associated with maintenance utility operation including the requirements of the JCAHO, SDOH, OSHA, and other federal, state and local agencies.
• Requires a minimum of 1 year relevant experience leading teams and 5 years of experience in HVAC, plumbing, electrical or other utility systems

While candidates who meet the minimum qualifications are encouraged to apply, the ideal candidate will bring:

• Previous Central Utility Plant or Powerhouse operations experience (strongly preferred).
• Experience overseeing steam, chilled water, boilers, and related mechanical systems.
• Prior leadership or supervisory experience managing technical or maintenance teams.
• Boiler Operator Certification or willingness to obtain certification within the first year.
• EPA Universal Refrigerant Certification or willingness to obtain within the first year.
• Strong understanding of preventive maintenance, asset management, and operational planning.
• Ability to work in a physically demanding environment, including lifting and carrying up to 50 pounds.
• A broad mechanical aptitude and understanding of multiple facility trades and systems.

Role Responsibilities

• Assists in planning, coordinating and supervising overall operation and maintenance of buildings and grounds.
• Organizes work, estimates worker-hour requirements and delegates work to technicians within the area.
• Schedules preventative maintenance and repairs on equipment and systems (mechanical, electrical, etc.).
• Trains technicians in general repair and maintenance, using operating manuals, work orders and blueprints.
• Assists technicians as needed with maintenance calls, troubleshooting, preventative maintenance and repair of various utility systems.
