Job description

JOB SUMMARY
Performs skilled work in the construction, maintenance, and repair of public facilities, buildings, equipment, and devices. Work involves a variety of trade skills through which assignments are carried out by utilizing tools and equipment of the trade and following blueprints, drawings, and oral instruction. Work may also involve a variety of other trade skills. The degree of complexity controlled by work experience and proficiency level and may include specialized work in either the carpentry, electrical, plumbing, welding, or concrete trades. May have responsibility for leading a crew of workers in maintenance, repair, and construction work.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
  • Receives job work orders, prints, sketches, wiring diagrams, specifications, and/or instructions from supervisor covering emergency and scheduled repairs, installation, and work to be performed; and estimates material requirements and tools or equipment needed to perform job.
  • Performs general tasks in the construction, renovation, modification, installation, and repair of county buildings, parks, apparatus, and facilities; makes general repairs to wood fixtures, wood decks, and handrails, signs, playgrounds, benches, ladders, and frames; and installs door locks, hinges, shelf brackets, and other hardware fixtures.
  • Constructs, erects, installs, and repairs structures and fixtures of wood, plywood, and wallboard; repairs wooden cabinets and furniture; installs wallpaper; muds and textures walls; and maintains shop and work areas.
  • Performs skilled carpentry tasks; builds cabinets; cuts and installs trim; installs laminate flooring; hangs door frames; frames walls; hangs drywall; installs and repairs roofing materials, gutters, and siding; and builds stairs, porches, and decks.
  • Performs semi-skilled plumbing tasks; snakes and clears drains; repairs faucets and flush valves; installs, maintains, and repairs plumbing systems including pipes, fittings, fixtures, and drainage systems.
  • Performs skilled plumbing tasks; troubleshoots and repairs electronic flush valves and faucet valves; and installs new construction plumbing pipes, floor drains, hot water tanks, water coolers, well pumps, and sprinkler systems.
  • Performs minor electrical tasks; replaces lamps and light fixtures; installs, maintains, and repairs switches, outlets, ballasts, and lighting equipment; repairs and maintains parking meters and bill changers.
  • Performs skilled electrical tasks; installs and repairs electrical panels, breakers, contactors, controls, and new circuits; repairs and maintains small engines and appliances; bends conduit; troubleshoots electrical problems; and calculates wire sizes and loads.
  • Performs general cleaning, moving, and stocking tasks; mops, sweeps, and vacuums floors; recycles materials; empties trash receptacles; dusts furniture and appliances; and moves furniture and office equipment.
  • Assists in performing masonry work such as mixing concrete, stucco, and block work, etc.; and installs or repairs poured concrete sidewalks, floors, walls, and stairs.
  • Paints interior and exterior of buildings; pressure washes, sands, caulks, and primes walls and surfaces; and paints, sands, stains, cuts and rolls walls and other surfaces.
  • Performs general landscape maintenance; assists in planting, transplanting, and removal of trees, plants, and shrubs.
  • Fabricates metal works from plans sketches or drawings using electric arc/gas.
  • Ensures all work activities comply with local, state, and federal codes and standards, and advises management on needed corrective actions.
  • Operates power and manual tools such as carpenter’s hand tools and power tools, woodworking equipment, spray guns, test equipment and electric arc/gas welding equipment.
  • Prepares reports, maintains records, and enters data to complete work orders.
  • May provide lead guidance, direction, and training to an assigned crew; confers with supervisor to obtain direction regarding work assignments and priorities; monitors status of work in progress and inspects completed work; assists with complex and problem situations; and provides technical expertise.
  • Provides exceptional customer assistance, problem-solving, and/or complaint resolution by all forms of communication.
Education and Experience:
An equivalent combination of relevant training, education and experience:
  • High school diploma or equivalent supplemented by some vocational or technical training in one or more building trades.
  • Two (2) years of experience in facilities maintenance and skilled trades work.

Licenses and/or Certificates:
  • Must maintain a valid driver’s license.
  • Depending on position assignment…if assigned to work within the Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office/Justice Center/Jail additional background checks will be required:
    • Criminal Justice Information Systems (CJIS)
    • FALCON
  • Knowledge of departmental policies, plans, and procedures.
  • Knowledge of modern office practices, plans, and procedures.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and other job-related computer programs and software applications.
  • Knowledge of the standard practices, methods, standard tools, and materials of the trade areas to which assigned.
  • Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions related to the work assigned.
  • Knowledge of basic structural principles.
  • Skill in the use and care of power and hand tools and equipment.
  • Skill in the use and care of light-duty trucks and other light-duty equipment used in the performance of duties.
  • Skill in effective communication, both orally and in writing.
  • Skill in prioritizing and organizing work.
  • Skill in the use of office equipment such as a computer, multi-line telephone system, scanner, fax machine, and copier.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team or work unit situation.
  • Ability to perform heavy manual labor.
  • Ability to detect defects in facilities, machinery, and equipment operation, make proper repairs and adjustments.
  • Ability to read blueprints and schematics and interpret and work from pencil sketches and diagrams; ability to draw sketches of proposed projects.
  • Ability to calculate quantities and prepare schedules relating to assigned projects.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to maintain accurate records and reports. Ability to exercise judgment and discretion in applying and interpreting department rules, regulations, policies, and procedures.
  • Ability to make recommendations and to use resourcefulness and tact in solving new problems.
  • Ability to plan, organize, direct, and appraise the work of assigned personnel.
  • Ability to act as lead worker, when appropriate, with a team of subordinates and/or peers.
  • Ability to ascertain priorities and meet deadlines and objectives.
  • Ability to provide internal/external guidance and customer assistance via all forms of communication.
  • Ability to use computers for data entry, word processing, and/or accounting purposes.
  • Ability to author reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with managers, service providers, other employees, and the general public.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Stooping, crouching, walking, pulling, lifting, grasping, hearing, seeing up close, seeing far away, kneeling, reaching, pushing, talking, standing, climbing, finger movement, repetitive motions, depth perception. Frequent lifting of up to 25 pounds; occasional lifting of up to 50 pounds.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
Work is exposed to one or more disagreeable conditions (i.e., irate customers, outdoors weather conditions, excessive noise, extreme heat, odors or dust).
