Job summary

University of Maryland is seeking a Facilities Projects Manager to plan, coordinate, track, and close out multiple projects across the College Park campus. You will oversee on-call and outside contractors and communicate timelines, methods, and materials to customers and internal users.

Job Description Summary

Organization’s Summary Statement: The Department of Residential Facilities is responsible for the maintenance and housekeeping services for the College Park Campus’ 70+ residence halls, Greek chapter houses, and recreational facilities encompassing over 2.7 million square feet. The department employs over 300 exempt, non-exempt, and student staff.

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES: The Facilities Projects Manager position plans, coordinates, tracks, closes out, and manages all assigned projects and manages the work of the University of Maryland on-call contractors and outside contractors. Projects managed would include emergency projects - flood/fire/mold/asbestos abatement/natural disasters, life safety, small-scale renovations, concrete, masonry, electrical, plumbing, mechanical, painting, carpentry, steel/iron works, roofing, and tree trimming. The incumbent is responsible for communicating with customers and internal users regarding preferred construction methods, materials, and timelines. The incumbent will develop solutions for and complete projects without completed design specifications or drawings.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Incumbent will be required to work from ladders, lifts, or scaffolding; to work in, on, around, over, and under fixed equipment and machinery; to manipulate heavy equipment, tools, and supplies, and exert force up to 70 lbs. Incumbent will be required to work in hazardous or irritating environments and adverse weather or temperature conditions. Incumbent will be required to wear and work in personal protective equipment. Work will include repetitive motion; the incumbent will be required to inspect work, involving bending, stooping, walking, and climbing. Will require extended hours due to weather emergencies, delayed openings and early closings, and system changeovers. Incumbent will lead snow removal activities, which may require working outside in cold weather for extended periods of time, which may occur outside of regular working hours.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Experience working in a facility of comparable size/scope is preferred. Journeyman level knowledge of a building trade such as carpentry, electrical, plumbing, or mechanical. A driver’s license with fewer than 6 points is required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES: Knowledge of facilities management. Skill in oral and written communication. Skill in the use of Microsoft Office and Google Workspace products. Ability to multitask and prioritize assignments. Ability to utilize estimating software.
