Job summary

Energy Systems Group (ESG) is seeking a Facilities Manager to join our Operations Services team at our Detroit, Michigan facility. This onsite role requires travel between operating sites, including overnights, to ensure continuity of operations.

The Facilities Manager is responsible for EHS, financial performance, reliability, energy savings, and customer satisfaction across ESG’s Detroit Arsenal and NASA Glenn sites. A strong technical background in boiler/HVAC systems and CMMS is essential.

Qualifications

  • High-level understanding of boiler and HVAC systems.
  • Five or more years of related experience in energy services, performance contracting, and/or HVAC industry.
  • Strong leadership and people-management skills.
  • Deep technical knowledge of facility energy infrastructure and maintenance practices.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee energy production facilities, budgets, and reliability to meet site objectives.
  • Lead safety programs and enforce regulatory requirements across sites.
  • Investigate incidents, implement corrective actions, and promote safe work practices.
  • Maintain strong customer relations and accountability for contract KPIs and reporting.
  • Develop operator training plans and manage succession and performance reviews.
  • Coordinate work with subcontractors and manage 24/7 contingency coverage.

Job description

ENERGY SYSTEMS GROUP is seeking a Facilities Manager to join our Operations Services team located at our facility in Detroit, Michigan. This position is onsite but requires travel between both operating sites as needed, including overnight stays, to ensure continuity of operations and achievement of site operating objectives.

The Facilities Manager is accountable for achieving results in environmental health and safety (EHS), financial performance, reliability, energy savings, customer satisfaction, and employee development at ESG’s Detroit Arsenal and NASA Glenn Research sites. The Facilities Manager fosters strong customer relationships and provides leadership, guidance, and technical support to facility operators. A solid technical understanding and hands‑on experience with steam production and HVAC equipment and systems, their components, related software, and cooling tower operations are essential. The manager establishes performance expectations at both employee and facility levels, ensures accurate tracking and reporting for facility, customer, and corporate requirements, and maintains compliance with all standards.

The Facilities Manager is a hands‑on leader, available 24/7 to assist with operational issues, repairs, and supervise on‑call employees, ensuring uninterrupted support and reliability.

The Essential Functions Of The Position Include
  • Oversee all aspects of energy production facilities, including commissioning, operations, maintenance, troubleshooting, budgeting, financial performance, EHS, efficiency, reliability, and customer satisfaction. Drive plans and actions to meet site objectives and customer contract Key Performance Indicators (KPI’s)
  • Lead site safety performance by enforcing regulatory and company rules, training employees, and promoting a strong safety culture
  • Investigate near misses and incidents, implement corrective actions, and observe safe work practices
  • Build and maintain positive relations with key customer management and staff employees to ensure the company maintains a positive image with our customers. Develop a comprehensive understanding and adherence to customer contracts
  • Manage orientation, training, and development plans to enhance operator technical and leadership skills
  • Establish performance expectations, track progress, and complete constructive performance appraisals
  • Responsible for employee scheduling, daily work direction, overtime authorization, and 24/7 contingency coverage plans
  • Oversee profit and loss performance by developing accurate budgets and forecasts, ensuring efficient utilization of budgeted funds, and managing labor and overtime costs to achieve site financial objectives.
  • Manage the overall health of the preventative maintenance system by ensuring effective CMMS utilization and implementing preventative, predictive, and reactive maintenance strategies that support reliable plant and equipment performance while meeting customer requirements and industry best practices
  • Coordinate work with subcontractors to support maintenance and projects
  • Responsible for collection and documentation of M&V data
  • Develop and deliver comprehensive monthly reports to the COR for all ESPC activities, ensuring the accuracy, completeness, and timely submission of all information provided
  • Responsible for verifying all customer invoices to ensure accurate cost allocation to the correct projects and for submitting time and material invoices to the government in a timely manner
  • Support ESPC and Above Baseline projects to include commissioning, quality assurance, and maintenance turnover activities
  • Lead root cause investigations for major equipment issues and implement preventive measures
  • Complete all training modules as required by the position and/or management
  • Responsible for operator responsibility coverage as needed during times of operator absence or staffing gaps
  • Performs all duties as deemed necessary by management
Your Background Includes
  • A high-level understanding of boiler and HVAC systems
  • Five or more years’ (5+) related experience in Energy Services, Performance Contracting, and/or HVAC industry
  • Strong leadership skills
  • Extensive field experience installing, repairing, maintaining, and modifying boilers and HVAC systems
  • Must possess in-depth technical knowledge of facility energy infrastructure (mechanical and electrical systems and equipment), energy conservation practices, facility operation and maintenance and other ancillary building systems and equipment
  • Experience troubleshooting relevant equipment and systems
  • Demonstrated strong safety background and focus to ensure zero incidents hazardous environment(s)
  • Located within reasonable distance from DAA facility
  • Availability for 24/7 call-in emergencies
A Bonus To Have

  • Prior supervisory experience
  • NIULPE Class IV Power Engineer certification (or higher)
