Job summary

Urban Community School in Cleveland is seeking a Skilled Maintenance Technician to support safe, reliable campus operations. This part-time, hands-on role begins at 5:30 a.m.

and includes routine repairs, preventative maintenance, and project work across plumbing, electrical, carpentry, and building systems. The ideal candidate is dependable, skilled in multiple trades, able to work independently, and proactive in addressing issues with campus facilities.

Qualifications

• Experience in building maintenance or facilities work.
• Experience in a school, institutional, or multi-building environment preferred.
• Valid driver's license preferred.

Responsibilities

• Perform routine and skilled repairs on plumbing, electrical, carpentry, drywall, painting, doors, locks, fixtures, and other building systems.
• Troubleshoot maintenance issues and determine whether repairs can be completed internally or require an outside contractor.
• Assemble, install, repair, and relocate furniture, shelving, equipment, and other campus fixtures.
• Complete minor repairs to restrooms, classrooms, offices, athletic spaces, and common areas.
• Repair and adjust doors, hinges, closers, locks, cabinetry, hardware, and related equipment.
• Replace light fixtures, bulbs, switches, outlets, and other components within the appropriate scope of the position.
• Address minor plumbing issues, including faucets, toilets, drains, fixtures, and leaks.
• Conduct early‑morning walkthroughs and building checks to identify maintenance or safety concerns before the start of the school day.
• Complete scheduled preventative maintenance and maintain appropriate records.
• Monitor building systems and equipment and report concerns requiring specialized service.
• Respond promptly to urgent maintenance needs that could affect school operations or safety.
• Help ensure classrooms, offices, athletic facilities, and shared spaces are safe and ready for daily use.
• Support seasonal facility needs and campus projects.
• Complete work orders using the UCS ticketing systems in a timely manner and communicate the status of repairs and projects.
• Coordinate with the Facilities Manager and Operations Manager team to prioritize daily and longer‑term maintenance needs.
• Assist with room setups, furniture moves, deliveries, and facility projects.
• Work appropriately with outside contractors and vendors when assigned.
• Maintain tools, equipment, maintenance areas, and supplies in a safe and organized manner.
• Follow all safety procedures and immediately communicate significant facility or safety concerns.
• Provide occasional evening or weekend support for events, emergencies, or time‑sensitive facility needs.

Summary

The Skilled Maintenance Technician supports the safe, reliable, and well‑maintained operation of the UCS campus. This hands‑on position is responsible for completing routine and skilled maintenance, repairs, preventative maintenance, building inspections, and facility projects across campus. The position begins at 5:30 a.m., allowing the technician to complete building checks, address maintenance needs, and prepare campus spaces before students and employees arrive. The ideal candidate is dependable, skilled in a variety of building trades, comfortable working independently, and able to identify and address problems proactively.

Education and Experience

• Demonstrated experience in building maintenance, facilities, construction, or a related skilled trade.
• Working knowledge of several building trades, such as plumbing, electrical, carpentry, drywall, painting, hardware, and general repair.
• Experience working in a school, institutional, commercial, or multi‑building environment preferred.
• Valid driver's license preferred.

Physical Requirements and Work Environment

• This is an active, hands‑on position. The employee must be able to regularly stand, walk, bend, kneel, climb stairs and ladders, use hand and power tools, and lift up to 50 pounds and move materials/equipment using on‑site carts across campus in multiple buildings.
• FBI/BCI background check.

• Hourly wage commensurate with experience ($25 - $28 per hour)

Additional Information

• Status: Part‑Time; Non‑Exempt
• Reports to: Operations Manager
• Hours & Schedule: This is a part‑time position averaging 25-29 hours per week. The regular workday begins at 5:30 a.m., Monday through Friday. The specific daily end time may vary based on the agreed‑upon weekly schedule and campus needs. Occasional evening and weekend availability is required for special events, projects, or urgent maintenance needs.
