Job description

Facilities Maintenance Technician

Walnut Creek Presbyterian Church (WCPC) is seeking a dependable, hands-on, and service-oriented Facilities Maintenance Technician to help care for and maintain our church campus. This position is an important part of our facilities team and is responsible for keeping our campus clean, safe, functional, and ready for worship, ministry, events, and community use.

This hands-on position combines routine facilities maintenance, campus cleanliness and upkeep, grounds care, event setup, and general facilities support. The ideal candidate enjoys working with their hands, takes pride in maintaining a well-kept environment, can work independently, and works collaboratively with the facilities team to respond to campus needs within the scope of the position.

Key Responsibilities
Campus Readiness & Daily Facilities Support
  • Help maintain a clean, orderly, safe, and ready-to-use campus during operating hours.
  • Address routine daytime cleanliness needs, including trash, recycling, and spot cleaning as needed.
  • Monitor campus spaces and report maintenance, safety, cleanliness, or equipment concerns.
  • Keep facilities, work areas, storage spaces, tools, and equipment organized.
Routine Maintenance & Facilities Support
  • Perform routine preventive maintenance, minor repairs, adjustments, and cosmetic upkeep within the scope of the position.
  • Assist with furniture, fixtures, campus equipment, and routine facilities projects.
  • Troubleshoot basic building and equipment issues and communicate concerns requiring specialized repair or vendor support.
  • Support the Facilities Manager and Facilities Trades Specialist with approved maintenance and improvement projects.
Event, Worship & Room Support
  • Set up, adjust, and restore rooms and campus spaces for worship services, ministry activities, rentals, and special events.
  • Move and arrange furniture, equipment, signs, and event materials as needed.
  • Provide scheduled facilities support for Sunday worship and other events, including opening and closing designated spaces.
  • Coordinate with staff and event teams to help ensure spaces are safe, functional, and ready for use.
Campus Equipment, Projects & Team Support
  • Assist with routine upkeep of campus equipment and specialized campus features within the scope of the position.
  • Support seasonal facilities work, campus improvements, and other approved projects as directed by the Facilities Manager.
  • Identify needs that fall outside the scope of the position and elevate them to the Facilities Manager or appropriate specialist/vendor.
Qualifications & Skills
  • Previous experience in facilities maintenance, building maintenance, custodial work, grounds maintenance, construction, or a related hands‑on field.
  • Basic knowledge of hand tools, power tools, cleaning equipment, and routine maintenance practices.
  • Ability to perform routine maintenance tasks safely and recognize when an issue should be escalated to the Facilities Manager or a qualified specialist.
  • Ability to work independently, take initiative, and follow through on assigned tasks.
  • Good organizational, troubleshooting, and problem‑solving skills.
  • Attention to detail and commitment to maintaining a clean, safe, functional, and welcoming campus.
  • Ability to communicate maintenance concerns, project needs, and safety issues clearly and promptly.
  • Dependability and punctuality, including for scheduled Sunday responsibilities and pre‑planned event support.
  • A service‑oriented, adaptable, and team‑focused approach to work.
  • Ability to interact respectfully and professionally with church staff, members, renters, preschool staff, vendors, and community members.
Physical Requirements
  • Standing and walking for extended periods.
  • Bending, stooping, reaching, climbing ladders, and working in various positions.
  • Lifting and carrying furniture, equipment, supplies, and other items.Operating hand tools, power tools, cleaning equipment, and grounds‑maintenance equipment.
  • Working both indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions.
  • Performing repetitive physical tasks as necessary.

Works with: Facilities Manager

Reports to: Facilities Manager

Hours/Schedule: This is a full‑time, 40‑hour‑per‑week position. The regular schedule is Sunday-Thursday, with typical hours of 6:00 AM-2:00 PM on Sundays and 10:00 AM-6:00 PM Monday-Thursday.

Compensation: $27.00 per hour
