Job summary

SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University seeks a full-time Maintenance Assistant, Plumber & Steamfitter to install, repair, and maintain piping, valves, fixtures, and steam systems in campus facilities. The role requires reading blueprints, using standard tools, and following safety standards.

Two years plumbing/steamfitting experience or a relevant two-year technical school program is expected, plus a valid NYS driver's license.

Qualifications

• Two years of full-time plumbing and/or steamfitting experience under supervision of a skilled tradesperson.
• Completion of an appropriate two-year technical school course in plumbing/steamfitting.
• Equivalent combination of experience and training through technical courses in plumbing/steamfitting.

Responsibilities

• Perform semiskilled repair, alteration, and installation in plumbing and steamfitting systems.
• Repair and maintain piping by cutting, bending, threading, and joining pipe; caulking leaks.
• Open clogged drains with plumber's snake or vacuum plunger; replace worn washers in valves.
• Cut passage holes and install pipes, fittings, and fixtures as directed.
• Follow specifications to repair steam equipment and regulate thermostats and other fixtures.
