Job summary

Ball State University is seeking a Facilities Landscape Worker to lead and assist in the maintenance of campus grounds on a full-time on-campus basis. Responsibilities include mowing, edging, planting, and equipment use, with a schedule from 7:00 am to 3:30 pm, Monday through Friday.

The role demands the ability to train staff and student workers, perform heavy physical tasks, and operate a variety of landscape machinery while adhering to safety standards. Comprehensive benefits are included.

Qualifications

Position Function

Under general supervision, lead, assign and perform duties related to the installation and maintenance of campus grounds.


Duties & Responsibilities


  • 1. Lead and assist in the assignment and direction of Facilities and Landscape Workers in the performance of lawn maintenance duties which include, but are not limited to, mowing with push, walk behind, standing, riding and tractor mowers; edge sidewalks with power edger, line trimmer, and / or hand spade; line trim around posts, poles, signs, ditch banks, etc. to control grass and weed growth. Requires the physical ability to stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, reach, stand, walk, push, pull, lift, finger, grasp, feel, talk, hear, and exert in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally, 50 pounds of force frequently, and 20 pounds of force constantly. Task requires visual ability to distinguish color and perceive depth. Task requires the ability to operate a variety of motorized equipment, various hand and power tools, etc. Employee is exposed to inside and outside environmental conditions, extreme cold, extreme heat, noise, vibrations, chemicals, dusts, fumes, odors, oils, and may be required to wear filter mask, respirator, and various protective clothing and/or equipment. Task requires the mental ability to receive, comprehend, follow, and provide oral instructions and information, and to read, comprehend, follow, and provide written instructions and information.

  • 2. Assist with the training of Facilities and Landscape Workers and student employees as assigned. Requires the physical ability to stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, reach, stand, walk, push, pull, lift, finger, grasp, feel, talk, hear, and exert in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally, 50 pounds of force frequently, and 20 pounds of force constantly. Task requires visual ability to distinguish color and perceive depth. Task requires the ability to operate a variety of motorized equipment, various hand and power tools, etc. Employee is exposed to inside and outside environmental conditions, extreme cold, extreme heat, noise, vibration, chemicals, dusts, fumes, odors, oils, and may be required to wear filter mask, respirator, and various protective clothing and/or equipment. Task requires the mental ability to receive, comprehend, follow, and provide oral instructions and information and to read, comprehend, follow, and provide written instructions and information.

  • 3. Lead and assist in the performance of landscape installation and maintenance duties which include, but are not limited to: planting trees, shrubs, annual and perennial flowers, ornamental grasses, ground covers, bulbs, etc.; use of tractors, skid steer loaders, mini loaders, articulated loaders, fork lifts, water trucks, and any other applicable equipment; apply mulch; create / maintain landscape beds using sod cutters, bed-edgers, hand spades; prune plant material utilizing formal and informal pruning methods with hand pruners, shears, pole pruners, power shears, or any other applicable equipment.. Requires the physical ability to stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, reach, stand, walk, push, pull, lift, finger, grasp, feel, talk, hear, and exert in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally, 50 pounds of force frequently, and 20 pounds of force constantly. Task requires visual ability to distinguish color and perceive depth. Task requires the ability to operate a variety of motorized equipment, various hand and power tools, etc. Employee is exposed to inside and outside environmental conditions, extreme cold, extreme heat, noise, vibration, chemicals, dusts, fumes, odors, oils, and may be required to wear filter mask, respirator, and various protective clothing and/or equipment.   • 4. Lead and assist in the performance of lawn installation duties which include, but are not limited to, soil preparations utilizing sod cutters, roto-tillers, box graders, skid steer loaders, combo-plane or other applicable equipment; roto-till, grade and rake soil; install grass seed either by sodding, hydro-seeding, slit seeder, or by hand spreader; apply starter fertilizer using spreaders or through hydro-seeder. Requires the physical ability to climb, stoop, reach, stand, walk, push, pull, lift, grasp, and exert in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally, 50 pounds of force frequently, and 20 pounds of force constantly. Task requires visual ability to distinguish color and perceive depth. Task requires the ability to operate a variety of motorized equipment, various hand and power tools, etc. Employee is exposed to inside and outside environmental conditions, dust, vibrations, noise, and may be required to wear filter mask, respirator, and various protective clothing and/or equipment. Task requires the mental ability to receive, comprehend, follow, and provide oral instructions and information, and to read, omprehend, follow, and provide written instructions and information.

  • 5. Lead and assist in the performance of leaf collection and disposal duties which include, but are not limited to: using hand rakes, hand and backpack blowers, equipment mounted blowers, lawn sweepers and / or vacuum equipment; collect and haul leaves and associated debris to composting site. Requires the physical ability to climb, balance, stoop, reach, stand, push, pull, lift, and exert in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally, 50 pounds of force frequently, and 20 pounds of force constantly. Task requires visual ability to distinguish color and perceive depth. Task requires the ability to operate a variety of motorized equipment, various hand and power tools, etc. Employee is exposed to inside and outside environmental conditions. Task requires the mental ability to receive, comprehend, follow, and provide oral instructions and information, and to read, comprehend, follow, and provide written instructions and information.

  • 6. Lead and assist in the performance of snow removal duties which include, but are not limited to: using hand shovels, hand brooms, snow blowers, tractor brooms, blades, snow blowers, tractor buckets truck mounted blades, both hand or motorized salt spreaders applying liquid and/or granular products, or other applicable equipment for the removal and maintenance of snow and ice from walks, streets, entrances, ramps, and other campus surfaces. Requires the physical ability to climb, stoop, reach, stand, walk, push, pull, lift, grasp, and exert in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally, 50 pounds of force frequently, and 20 pounds of force constantly. Task requires visual ability to distinguish color and perceive depth. Task requires the ability to operate a variety of motorized equipment, various hand and power tools, etc. Employee is exposed to inside and outside environmental conditions, dust, vibrations, noise, and may be required to wear filter mask, respirator, and various protective clothing and/or equipment.   • 7. Lead and assist in the performance of trash / recycling duties which include, but are not limited to: picking up trash and recyclable materials from ground, containers, docks, buildings, or other campus locations and place in proper containers; deliver / pick-up trash and recycle containers for special events. Requires the physical ability to climb, stoop, reach, stand, walk, push, pull, lift, grasp, and exert in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally, 50 pounds of force frequently, and 20 pounds of force constantly. Task requires visual ability to distinguish color and perceive depth. Task requires the ability to operate a variety of motorized equipment, various hand and power tools, etc. Employee is exposed to inside and outside environmental conditions, dust, vibrations, noise, and may be required to wear filter mask, respirator, and various protective clothing and/or equipment.   • 8. Lead and assist in the performance of equipment maintenance duties which include, but are not limited to: hand and power equipment; properly cleaning all equipment after use; returning equipment to proper storage area after use; keeping equipment in a safe and proper working order; replacing and sharpening mower blades; reporting broken, damaged, or non-functioning equipment to supervision; maintaining a clean and safe working conditions in all areas of operation. Requires the physical ability to climb, stoop, reach, stand, walk, push, pull, lift, grasp, and exert in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally, 50 pounds of force frequently, and 20 pounds of force constantly. Task requires visual ability to distinguish color and perceive depth. Minimum Qualifications


  • High School diploma or equivalent (GED).

  • Two (2) years experience in or related to grounds maintenance.

  • Must be able to read and comprehend all specified policies and procedures for safety, hazardous materials information, University policies, procedures, and communications, and perform mathematical calculations.

  • Must possess and maintain a valid Drivers License and be insurable under the university’s auto fleet policy.

  • Must be able to perform all mental and physical requirements outlined in each job duty.

  • You must be 18 years or older.


Preferred Qualifications


  • Associate degree in a related field.

  • Previous supervisory experience in grounds maintenance or landscaping.
