Job description

GENERAL SUMMARY :

Under minimal supervision, operates, maintains, and repairs electrical, plumbing, tube system, fire alarm system, and mechanical equipment within all Edward facilities, including compressors, boilers, air and water valves, oxygen and vacuum systems, rooftop units, and emergency generators. Repairs, adjusts, and regulates heating, ventilating, and air conditioning systems within facilities. Maintains and repairs non-clinical electronic components such as television controls and nursing call systems. Performs related duties including ordering materials, assisting others in difficult and/or complex work, and maintaining documentation according to departmental procedures.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES :

  1. Repairs and conducts preventative maintenance of electrical, plumbing, and mechanical equipment within the facility. Selects appropriate tools, materials, and supplies, and performs shutdowns of electrical circuits and water flow as needed. Repairs and maintains non-clinical electronic components such as fire alarm systems, building utilities, water, steam, electrical, med gas, natural gas, and compressed air systems. Notifies appropriate personnel of difficult and/or complex problems.
  2. Notifies affected departments/staff when service interruptions are necessary for emergency repairs.
  3. Operates and maintains high-pressure boilers, A/C chillers, cooling towers, and related plant equipment. Performs chemistry tests at the start of shifts as appropriate. Ensures all work is performed professionally.
  4. Performs routine and preventative maintenance on plant equipment, HVAC systems, and related components according to manufacturer specifications.
  5. Performs major repairs on fan motors, HVAC equipment, plumbing, and electrical systems.
  6. Monitors critical alarms via pager and facility management systems. Responds to alarms, investigates issues, repairs conditions, contacts vendors, and logs activities.
  7. Requests materials and supplies to support stock levels. Maintains a clean and organized work area.
  8. Completes work request forms, activity reports, and maintains departmental records.
  9. Identifies major problems, initiates corrective actions, and reports to management.
  10. Logs critical alarms and significant events with date, time, and signature for review.
  11. Responds to code calls as appropriate.
  12. Offsite engineers operate, troubleshoot, and repair rooftop units, air handler units, boilers, chillers, and associated HVAC systems.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED :

1. Preferred Education, Skills, and Experience :

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Minimum of three years of facilities/engineering experience

2. Required License and Certification :

  • Stationary Engineer License (Chicago or Elgin) within six months of employment
  • Valid driver’s license if performing duties at off-site locations, with maintained automobile liability coverage if using personal vehicle

3. Preferred License and Certification :

  • Universal EPA Certification
