Job description

Lead Instructor, Programming in Swift Course

The Digital Scholars Program is an intensive summer pre-college program which aims to build a deeper and more diverse pool of students pursuing computing and technology-related fields in Illinois. High school students and incoming freshman at City Colleges of Chicago and Illinois institutions can take courses in computer science, data science, electrical and computer engineering, or mobile app development, as well as build college and career-readiness skills, and increase their exposure to and connectivity with Chicago’s dynamic tech community.

The Programming in Swift Lead Instructor position is a 6-week assignment to implement quality instructional and assessment practices with the purpose of positively impacting student achievement.

Reporting to the Associate Director of Student Programming, the Programming in Swift Lead Instructor is responsible for....

Responsibilities:

· Becoming familiar with the Programming in Swift curriculum framework and creating the strategic pacing plan for the targeted content to be completed within the 6-week program

· Designing an engaging curriculum implementation strategy which alternates between whole group, small group, and individual learning experiences

· Adapting traditional and non-traditional teaching methods to provide instruction and support to Scholars based on their individual needs, abilities, and interests

· Preparing groups of 2-3 Scholars to pitch an MVP for the Everyone Can Code Chicago Showcase

· Establishing, managing, and maintaining a safe and equitable classroom environment which ensures daily outcomes are met and Scholars stay on track relative to larger program outcomes

· Qualitatively assessing Scholar learning each week, providing feedback and learning support as needed

· Documenting techniques and approaches used to implement the Programming in Swift curriculum to serve as a program resource

· Participating in weekly staffing meetings to ensure information is exchanged and used in the development and support of the Programming in Swift Lead Instructor and Scholar learning experiences

Required Qualifications:

· Experience with the Swift Coding Language & the XCode IDE

· Bachelor’s degree in education or a related field from an accredited college or university

· Minimum of two (2) years professional experience in education or a related field

Preferred Qualifications:

· App Development with Swift Associate or Certified User Certifications

· Experience teaching Computer Science in the high school or middle grades setting

· Demonstrated effectiveness working with minoritized populations of students (eg: Black, Latinx, young women, non-binary, and first generation)

Position Dates, Times, and Location:

The Digital Scholars Program is scheduled to begin on Monday, June 23, 2025 and end on Friday, August 1, 2025. All on-site instructional times are scheduled to take place at 565 W. Adams Street in Chicago. Digital Scholars Program Staff are expected to report in-person from 9:30 AM – 12:30 PM, Monday through Wednesday and 9:30 AM – 1:30 PM on Thursdays.

This position requires an orientation session for all Digital Scholars Program Staff, scheduled for Wednesday, June 4 at 5:00 PM via Zoom. Additionally, this position requires attendance at the Digital Scholars Student Orientation Session as well as the Program Closing Celebration. The Digital Scholars Student Orientation is scheduled for Wednesday, June 18 at 6:00 PM via Zoom, and the Program Closing Celebration is scheduled for Friday, August 1 at a location to be determined.

Should a group of Scholars be selected to participate in the Everyone Can Code Chicago Showcase, this position will require attendance to the Pitch & Polish day, tentatively scheduled for the afternoon of Wednesday, July 30 as well as the showcase itself tentatively scheduled for the afternoon of Thursday, July 31.

Position Funding:

The hourly rate for this position is $45 per hour, for up to 125 hours over the duration of the Digital Scholars Program.

APPOINTMENT INFORMATION
This is a 0%, 900 hour, Extra Help position. The expected start date is May 16, 2025. Minimum starting salary is $45.00/hour, and is commensurate with experience.
