North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University seeks an Extension Agent-CRD for Cabarrus County to lead community food systems initiatives and connect residents with local food sources through growers, stores, pantries, and food banks.

The focus area of the Cabarrus County CRD Agent will be CommunityFood Systems. This agent will take the lead in county and communityprograms and initiatives aimed at maintaining and strengthening thelocal food system through multiple perspectives. The role willprimarily concentrate on consumers, businesses, markets, andpolicymakers, ensuring that the specific needs of Cabarrus Countyare addressed. These needs will be identified through periodiccommunity assessments, with strategies adjusted accordingly.
The primary objective of this position is to connect localcommunity members with local food sources by supporting localgrowers, producers, stores, markets, pantries, and food banks.Additional support for these entities may involve identifyinggrants and funding opportunities. Furthermore, the role includesincreasing residents’ access to affordable, locally-grown food byimplementing and sustaining in Cabarrus County markets and otherrelated programs. This will be accomplished through collaborationwith external organizations, the enhancement of existing programs,and the development of new initiatives.

The Cooperative Extension Program at North Carolina Agriculturaland Technical State University is an educational outreachorganization within the College of Agriculture and EnvironmentalSciences. Cooperative Extension at A&T providesresearched-based educational information, programming and technicalassistance to limited-resource audiences that address a diverserange of issues in four programmatic areas – Agriculture andNatural Resources, Family and Consumer Sciences, Community andRural Development, and 4-H Youth Development. Together with itspartners – North Carolina State University Cooperative ExtensionService, U.S. Department of Agriculture, and state and countygovernments, a dynamic and resourceful system is formed. Inaddition to campus operations, The Cooperative Extension Programhas professionally staffed offices in almost half of the 100counties in North Carolina and the Eastern Band of CherokeeIndians.
Cabarrus County is a county located in the southwestern region ofthe state of North Carolina. As of the 2020 Census, the populationwas 225,804, comprising six municipalities and twelve zip codeswith the largest city, Concord, being the county seat. CabarrusCounty is thriving as the eleventh largest county in NorthCarolina, ranks sixth in growth, and is the eight most denselypopulated county in the state. With a strong network of recreationcenters and social and health services, our growing populationenjoys a multitude of community benefits and this position willwork to strengthen the food systems connection within all of theseas the population continues to grow. With a current rate of 10%food insecurity, 25,000 residents who live in food deserts and27,000 who receive food benefits, there are many who need our helpaccessing fresh nutritious food in the county.
Bachelor’s degree with a cumulative grade point average of 2.5overall or a 3.0 in the major field of study (based on a 4.0scale), or completion of a Master’s degree; a personal automobileand valid driver’s license; computer literacy; strong oral andwritten communication skills; the ability to plan, implement,market, and evaluate educational programs; willingness to work as ateam member and support a total Extension program; and the abilityto handle multiple demands and set priorities.
For all Agent positions, a Master’s degree is preferred.
