Job summary

NC State Extension Forestry in Iredell County, NC seeks an Extension Agent for Ag, Field Crops and Dairy in a 12-month, full-time role. The agent leads educational programs, conducts on-farm research, and coordinates pesticide education to support county agriculture.

The position emphasizes collaboration with Extension staff, farmers, and community organizations, with travel within the county and occasional state travel. A relevant degree and valid driver's license are required.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree with ≥2.5 GPA overall or ≥3.0 in an agricultural or related field.
• Master's degree in an agricultural or related field.
• Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation; NCDL within 60 days of hire.

Responsibilities

• Plan, implement, and evaluate educational programs for field crops (corn, soybeans, cotton, wheat) and dairy production.
• Conduct on-farm research in the above crop areas.
• Provide pesticide education and serve as county pesticide coordinator.
• Develop and maintain dairy producer and animal waste operator certification programs.
• Collaborate with Extension staff, agencies, and community organizations to reach intended audiences.
• Assist with training for private operators to obtain and maintain licenses.
• Engage in outreach, including field days, workshops, and media communications.
• Report findings for publication and inform university research priorities.

Primary Purpose

The agent leads field crops and dairy programs in Iredell County, conducting need assessments, program evaluations, and providing future direction for the county Extension programs.

Duties and Responsibilities

• Plan, implement, and evaluate educational programs for field crops (corn, soybeans, cotton, wheat) and dairy production.

Travel Requirements

Travel within Iredell County and occasional travel within the state and district are required.

Requirements and Preferences

• One of the following: Bachelor’s degree with ≥2.5 GPA overall or ≥3.0 in an agricultural or related field; or a Bachelor’s with half of master’s coursework finished with ≥3.0 GPA; or a Master’s degree in an agricultural or related field.
• Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation. Valid NCDL must be obtained within 60 days of hire.
• Strong communication, presentation, public relations, leadership, time management, and resource development skills.
• Experience in field crop and dairy production, agricultural extension, or related technical assistance roles is preferred.
