Northeastern University seeks an Explore Program Academic Advisor to guide undeclared first-year students through academic exploration and major decisions. You will design and implement exploratory programs and events connecting students with faculty, peers, and resources across majors.

The role requires in-person work five days a week on the Boston campus, with collaboration across network campuses to support first-year success.

Qualifications

• Master's degree preferred in counseling, human services, or higher education.
• At least two years of work or educational experience in higher education.
• Excellent written and oral communication skills and ability to communicate with diverse populations.
• Strong knowledge of Excel and Word; detail-oriented with precision.
• Strong public speaking and presentation skills; collaborative team player.
• Must work in person at Northeastern's Boston campus five days per week.

Responsibilities

• Provide guidance to undeclared first-year students to support exploration and clarify majors.
• Interpret academic policies and advise on curricular matters related to majors and NUpath.
• Build first-semester schedules for incoming undeclared students.
• Advise on course selection to support timely progression and graduation.
• Identify at-risk students and help navigate academic and personal issues.
• Coordinate with network campuses to ensure robust support for Explore students.

About the Opportunity

This job description is intended to describe the general nature andlevel of work being performed by people assigned to thisclassification. It is not intended to be construed as an exhaustivelist of all responsibilities, duties and skills required ofpersonnel so classified.

The Explore Program Academic Advisor will work with undeclaredfirst-year students to provide them with holistic guidance andsupport as they explore their academic interests and make thetransition to their majors. The Academic Advisor will design andimplement exploratory programs and events which allow students toconnect with faculty, students, and resources from various majorsacross the University. This position will also work closely withcampus partners and advising teams on Northeastern's undergraduatenetwork campuses (London, New York, and Oakland) to serve as aresource for first-year students as they prepare for theirtransition to Northeastern's Boston campus.

About the Explore Program

The Explore Program provides personalized and holistic support tofirst-year students who have not yet declared a major as theyengage in academic exploration and self-discovery. The programachieves this through individual advising, exploratory events andworkshops, and a first-year seminar course.

Qualifications:

Master's degree preferred, preferably in counseling, humanservices, or higher education. At least two years of work oreducational experience, preferably in higher education. Must enjoyworking with first-year students and helping them adjust to collegelife. The successful candidate will:

• Be able to communicate and interact effectively with diversepopulations
• Have demonstrated counseling ability utilizing developmenttheory to create a student-centered academic environment
• Value and provide confidentiality around sensitive issues and have the ability to determine appropriate levels of communicationaround sensitive information
• Possess excellent written and oral communication skills, as well as strong knowledge of Excel and Word
• Be detail-oriented and have the ability to work with precision
• Possess strong public speaking and presentation skills
• Demonstrate qualities that facilitate collaboration in ateam-oriented environment
• Effectively set goals, multi-task and manage time
• Work in person at Northeastern's Boston campus five days perweek

Key Responsibilities:

Academic Advising:

• Provide guidance to undeclared students to support theirfirst-year exploration and assist with academic and career pathclarification
• Through in-person, virtual and email communication, the advisorwill interpret and explain academic policies and procedures andadvise on curricular matters concerning major and NUpathrequirements
• Build first-semester schedules for incoming undeclaredstudents
• Provide course scheduling advice based on knowledge offirst-year curriculum across the University to support students'timely paths to graduation
• Identify students at risk of not staying on track forgraduation and help students navigate academic and personal issuesas they arise
• Ensure Explore students on all network campuses receive robustsupport throughout their first year and can fully engage in themajor exploration process, regardless of their campus

Advising-Related Projects and Programs:

• Design and implement events that help students identify thebest major for them
• Responsible for one or more sections of the first-year seminar:FSEM1000, Connections and Decisions in the fall and springsemesters, which includes delivering educational workshops to guidestudents through Northeastern processes
• Support the staffing of Orientation and Admissions events,which may occasionally take place outside of typical workhours
• Support departmental communications and marketing to ensureundeclared students are familiar will all resources to assist themin their path to declaring a major
• Collaborate with campus partners to deliver resources,communication, and programming to new students from all academicprograms who are transitioning to Boston after completing a year ona network campus
