Wisconsin Department of Veterans Affairs is seeking an HVAC/R systems expert to maintain, troubleshoot, and repair complex campus systems, including air handling units, chillers, and building automation. The role involves working with pneumatic and electric systems, DDCs, and direct digital controls, with safety-first procedures in occupied spaces for the Wisconsin Veterans Home at King.

The position offers a 7:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.

The Wisconsin Veterans Home at King (WVHK) is seeking a heating-ventilation-air conditioning and refrigeration (HVAC/R) systems expert to join our Power Plant & Utilities Services team. The Home is a 24/7/365 skilled nursing, long-term care facility that specializes in providing comfort, support, and professional healthcare services to elderly or disabled veterans and their spouses. The facility is located on the picturesque shoreline of the Chain O'Lakes, off Highway 10 between Stevens Point and Appleton.

Position Summary

Under general supervision of the Power Plant Superintendent and working with the Steamfitter and other systems experts at WVHK, this position maintains, troubleshoots and repairs pneumatic, electric, and HVAC/R systems throughout campus. The position works on equipment and systems that include air handling units, centrifugal chillers, an evaporative cooling tower, refrigeration units, hydronic heating systems, unit heaters, air compressors, retherm units, building automation systems, direct digital controls (DDCs), and ductless split A/C systems.

Salary Information

Starting wage will be $32.21 per hour.

Job Details

This position works a base schedule of 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. There is the potential for after-hours call ins for urgent or emergent situations.

Job duties involve climbing and working from ladders and/or scaffolding; working in tight, poorly lit and/or poorly ventilated spaces containing equipment, controls, wiring and piping; performing heavy work, occasionally exerting more than 100 pounds of force to move and/or install/remove equipment; and using personal protective equipment (PPE). Safety-toe shoes must be worn at all times on the job.

Work is performed on site in common areas and occupied individual rooms, around elderly, disabled, or mental health-compromised residents.

Due to the nature of the position, WDVA will conduct a criminal background check prior to an offer of employment.

Employment in this position is contingent upon passing a pre‑employment tuberculosis (TB) skin test.

A 12-month probationary period may be required.

Qualifications

The minimum qualifications that will be assessed in the first step of the process are:

• a current Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Section 608 Technician certification (Universal Refrigerant Handling); and
• the ability to meet the standards for operating a State of Wisconsin Fleet vehicle:

The Driver Must

• Have a valid driver's license; and
• Have a minimum of two years’ licensed driving experience; and
• Be 18 years of age or older

AND

Have a Driving Record That Does Not Show

• Three or more moving violations and/or at fault accidents in the past two years; or
• An Operating While Intoxicated (OWI) or Driving Under the Influence (DUI) citation within the past 12 months; or
• A suspension or revocation of driver's license

Qualifications that will be reviewed in next steps of the process are experience:

• Installing, maintaining, and repairing HVAC/R systems and equipment and related mechanical systems
• Working on computerized and digital HVAC systems including DDCs
• Following safety requirements and procedures
• Working independently and as part of a team
• Organizing and prioritizing work assignments
• Providing customer service
• Installing, maintaining, and repairing industrial/commercial/multi-building HVAC/R systems
• Using computers for work tasks, including building management systems and work order systems
• Maintaining safety and security for self and others when working in occupied areas
• Resolving or mitigating hazards following appropriate procedures

Completion of technical school (or equivalent) education in electronics, HVAC, and refrigeration is desirable.
