Job summary

Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory is seeking an Experimental Physicist Postdoctoral Fellow to advance distributed quantum computing through optical interconnects among neutral atoms, rare-earth crystals, and trapped ions. You will help scale heterogeneous qubit technologies and integrate light‑matter interfaces with quantum networks.

The role involves building, operating, and iterating experimental platforms, developing control systems, and collaborating with ESnet, AMCR, and NERSC

Qualifications

• Ph.D. (and/or prior postdoctoral experience) in quantum computing, quantum optics, quantum networking, or a closely related field.
• Hands‑on experimental experience with multiple qubit platforms and optical interfaces is essential.
• Experience designing and operating optical systems for trapping, imaging, and addressing single atoms/ions or solid‑state qubits.
• Ability to analyze data with appropriate computational tools and collaborate with theory teams.

Responsibilities

• Build and commission new experimental apparatus for laser‑cooled neutral‑atom and/or cryogenically cooled solid‑state qubit platforms.
• Develop and maintain experimental control systems, including hardware and electronics.
• Perform experiments involving coherent manipulation of multi‑qubit platforms and their optical interconnection for quantum networking.
• Analyze experimental results using numerical and computational techniques.
• Collaborate with theory groups to support experiments and develop new ideas.
• Provide technical feedback to engineering teams for scalable implementations.
