EXPERIENCED Veterinary Assistant Technician

Position Overview

The purpose of this position is to ensure quality care for pets and promote greater efficiency by relieving technicians and veterinarians of technical and administrative work. The Assistant performs a variety of patient- and client-care duties, conducts patient assessments, oversees animals recovering from anesthesia, and performs procedures and treatments.

The Assistant uses sound judgment when making decisions about patient care, responds quickly and calmly to emergencies, and maintains high standards of patient care. This person communicates clearly with veterinarians, practice personnel, and clients to ensure proper care. Assistants are friendly, flexible, and capable of multitasking, prioritizing, and thinking creatively. They believe in high-quality care and communicate this to clients. The Assistant also maintains the hospital's cleanliness and may train other team members.

Reports to Practice Manager and works alongside veterinarians and technicians, supporting various tasks as determined by the scope of practice.

Primary Responsibilities
Patient Care
  • Provides compassionate care, keeping patients comfortable.
  • Alerts veterinarians to changes in patient condition.
  • Recognizes contagious diseases and follows protocols.
  • Provides safe restraint and administers medications.
  • Assists with anesthesia recovery, surgery, dentistry, emergency care, and treatments.
  • Ensures accurate documentation and patient handling.
Equipment and Facility Maintenance
  • Cleans and maintains surgical equipment.
  • Keeps hospital clean, stocked, and organized.

Requirements
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Minimum three years' recent veterinary or medical experience.
  • Experience with medical records and data management.
  • Knowledge of veterinary terminology and procedures.
  • Ability to restrain animals properly and work independently.
  • Strong communication and compassionate client service skills.
  • Ability to lift objects over 40 pounds with or without assistance.
  • Work ethic to handle long shifts, sometimes over 10 hours.
