General Summary

  • This role is considered the minimum role for all nurses at UMMC with greater than 12 months of experience. The nurse will be competent in the skills and knowledge required and fully participate in unit governance. They will practice and adhere to the guidelines specified in the UMMC Professional Nurse Job Charter. Independently provides and coordinates care for patients within a clinical specialty. Serves as an effective and participative member of the multidisciplinary patient care team. Demonstrates and models the full range of nursing practice in both care delivery and participation in developing strategies to improve patient outcomes, satisfaction, and cost-effectiveness at the unit level. Is accountable to patients and families for care processes and outcomes during an episode of care. Is accountable to peers for advancing group practice on the unit, and to the nurse manager for overall work performance.

Education and Experience

  • Successful completion of probation; current on all mandatory classes/training.
  • Licensure as a Registered Nurse in Maryland or eligibility due to Compact agreements outlined through the MD Board of Nursing.
  • Maintains 10 contact hours of education per year.
  • Member of a professional organization.
  • Recent applicable clinical experience in a comparable setting.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Ability to lead others effectively, such as as charge nurse, preceptor, or clinical resource. Effectiveness as a multidisciplinary team member.
  • Ability to learn and utilize computer systems to manage patient information.
  • Knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the patient population(s) served. Understanding of growth and development principles over the lifespan and ability to assess data relevant to patient needs based on age and population.
  • Highly effective interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.
  • Ensures patient safety in job functions and participates in safety initiatives.
  • Acts to correct observed risks to patient safety.
  • Reports adverse events and near misses appropriately.
  • Identifies potential risks in processes, procedures, or devices and communicates them to management.
