General Summary
- This role is considered the minimum role for all nurses at UMMC with over 12 months of experience. The nurse will be competent in required skills and knowledge, and fully participate in unit governance. They will practice and adhere to the guidelines specified in the UMMC Professional Nurse Job Charter. The nurse independently provides and coordinates care within a clinical specialty and serves as a fully effective member of the multidisciplinary patient care team. They demonstrate and model the full range of nursing professional practice, contribute to strategies that improve patient outcomes, satisfaction, and cost-effectiveness at the unit level. The nurse is accountable to patients and families for care processes and outcomes during an episode, to peers for group practice advancement, and to the nurse manager for overall work performance.

Qualifications
Education and Experience
- Successful passing of probation, current mandatory classes/training completed.
- Maryland RN licensure or eligibility via Compact agreements outlined by the MD Board of Nursing.
- Maintain 10 contact hours of education annually.
- Membership in a professional organization.
- Recent clinical experience in a comparable setting.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Ability to lead others effectively, such as as charge nurse, preceptor, or clinical resource; effective as a multidisciplinary team member.
- Proficiency in learning and using computer systems for patient information management.
- Knowledge of care principles appropriate to the patient population, including growth and development over the lifespan and assessment of patient data related to age-specific needs.
- Strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.
Patient Safety
- Ensure patient safety in job functions and participate in safety initiatives.
- Take action to address observed safety risks.
- Report adverse events and near misses to management.
- Identify and communicate potential risks in processes, procedures, or devices.
