Job summary

Hartford HealthCare’s Backus Hospital in Connecticut is seeking a qualified Exercise Specialist to administer cardiac rehab programs for patients with cardiovascular and pulmonary disorders, in collaboration with RNs and therapists.

The role focuses on testing, program design to improve endurance, strength and balance, and requires ACSM certification and a Bachelor’s degree. BLS certification and experience in rehab are preferred.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Exercise Science, Exercise Physiology, Kinesiology or related field.
  • ACSM Clinical Exercise Specialist certification.
  • BLS certification required or preferred.
  • One year experience in cardiopulmonary rehabilitation preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Administer aerobic and other exercise programs for patients with cardiovascular and pulmonary conditions.
  • Conduct maximal and submaximal graded exercise tests and develop programs to improve endurance, strength and balance.
  • Collaborate with RNs and therapists to promote health behavior change.

Job Summary

Responsible for administering aerobic and other exercise programs with patients with cardiovascular and pulmonary disorders in collaboration and conjunction with RN’s and therapists to enhance quality of life, manage health risk, and promote lasting health behavior change. The specialist performs maximal and submaximal graded exercise tests, and develops and administer programs designed to enhance aerobic endurance, cardiovascular function, muscular strength and endurance and, balance.

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Exercise Science, Exercise Physiology, Kinesiology, Physical or Occupational Therapy or equivalent combination of education and/or experience.
  • Certification as a Clinical Exercise Specialist through the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM)
  • BLS certified
  • One (1) year experience in cardiopulmonary rehabilitation preferred.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
  • Ability to read and understand oral and written instructions, and effectively communicate information. Basic computer skills (including opening/reading email, basic internet use).
  • Thorough knowledge of cardiac exercise programs and exercise science.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills necessary to communicate with departments, employees, physicians and managers. Works efficiently and organizes time appropriately.

  • Must be organized, flexible, a team player and able to work efficiently in a noisy environment.
