Job summary

The Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission is seeking a General Counsel in Indianapolis to provide strategic legal guidance to the Chairman and Commissioners. You will oversee the Office of General Counsel, supervise four Assistant General Counsels and a Legal Assistant, and defend orders on appeal while ensuring regulatory compliance.

This exempt, executive role requires a JD, Indiana Bar membership, and 7+ years of experience, with a focus on utility law, contract review, and legislation.

Qualifications

• Juris Doctor Degree required and licensed to practice law in Indiana.
• 7+ years of legal experience in public or regulatory practice.
• Thorough knowledge of statutes, rules, and regulatory procedures.
• Ability to supervise staff, manage budgets, and provide legal opinions.

Responsibilities

• Direct the Legal Division staff and oversee workflows and projects.
• Render legal opinions to agency leadership and management.
• Draft legal documents, agency policy, rules, and legislation.
• Review contracts and manage agency litigation with outside counsel.
• Serve as Ethics Officer and ensure compliance with policies.
• Develop cost-saving and efficient processes within budget.
