Summary

The Executive Director for Business Development is a senior leadership role responsible for advancing Moffitt Cancer Center’s mission through the creation and execution of high‑impact external partnerships. This position leads the development of research collaborations, strategic alliances, technology licenses, joint ventures, and spin‑out companies that translate scientific discoveries into meaningful patient impact.

Responsibilities

• Build, negotiate, and structure research collaborations, strategic alliances, and joint‑venture agreements that align with Moffitt’s strategic priorities.
• Develop sophisticated financial models to price deals, prepare budgets, and draft term sheets.
• Provide clear business justification for deal terms, secure leadership approvals, and lead negotiations with external partners.
• Collaborate with legal counsel on contract strategy, execution, and contract negotiation.
• Supervise and mentor business development staff while serving as a trusted advisor to executive leadership.

Minimum Skills and Specialized Training

• Advanced financial modeling and valuation, including licensing, collaboration, and joint‑venture transactions.
• Strong negotiation, persuasion, and deal‑structuring capabilities.
• Working knowledge of intellectual property, licensing models, sponsored research, and research funding mechanisms.
• Ability to justify and communicate deal terms, financial assumptions, and strategic value to senior leadership.
• Proven ability to manage multiple complex transactions simultaneously.
• Executive‑level written and verbal communication skills.
• Experience working in or with academic medical centers, research institutions, or life sciences organizations.
• Demonstrated supervisory and team‑leadership skills.

Minimum Experience Required

• Doctorate, Master’s, MBA, or JD and a minimum of eight (8) years progressive experience in business development, strategic partnerships, licensing, corporate development, or related fields.
• Minimum two (2) years of supervisory or people‑management experience.
• Demonstrated experience negotiating complex agreements such as research collaborations, licenses, strategic alliances, or joint ventures.
• Experience working closely with legal counsel on contract negotiations and execution.

Preferred Education

• Ph.D. in life sciences, business, finance, law, healthcare administration, or a related field.
