Job summary

Animal Protection Society of Durham is seeking an Executive Director to guide the organization in Durham, NC, with a focus on strategic growth, strong partnerships, and accountable governance. This on-site leadership role reports to the Board and oversees seven direct reports to advance lifesaving programs and community services.

Qualifications

• Significant senior leadership experience in a nonprofit or mission-driven organization.
• Experience with facility planning, capital campaigns, or growth initiatives preferred.
• Strong people leadership with coaching, performance management, and accountability.
• Exceptional communication and relationship-building, with collaborative mindset.

Responsibilities

• Lead organizational stabilization and drive sustainable growth and strategic development.
• Foster cross-department collaboration, transparency, and accountability across teams.
• Strengthen leadership capacity of directors and supervisors through coaching and clear expectations.
• Ensure effective operations across sheltering, medical care, intake, foster, and community programs.
• Develop strategic priorities with the Board and staff and translate them into annual plans.
• Build partnerships with government, donors, and community stakeholders to advance the mission.
