During this transition, the Executive Director’s first priority will be ensuring the health, safety, and well-being of our animals while also creating the systems needed for Sugar Roots to operate successfully at its new location. The position will begin part-time with flexibility in scheduling and location. Some responsibilities can be completed from home, while others will require an on-site presence at The Batture.

  • Make the health, safety, and well-being of Sugar Roots animals a top priority.
  • Oversee daily animal care routines, feeding, cleaning, enrichment, and general husbandry.
  • Ensure animal enclosures and spaces are safe, clean, appropriate, and well maintained.
  • Monitor animals for changes in health or behavior and coordinate veterinary care when needed.
  • Create and maintain clear animal-care procedures for staff and volunteers.
  • Coordinate animal-care schedules to ensure dependable coverage every day.
Staff & Volunteer Management
  • Recruit, schedule, organize, and communicate with employees and volunteers.
  • Create weekly and monthly staffing and volunteer schedules.
  • Provide clear expectations and training for those working with the animals and public.
  • Help build a positive, dependable, and collaborative team culture.
  • Ensure adequate staffing for open days, programs, special events, and animal care.
Open Days & Visitor Experience

  • Make sure animals, staff, volunteers, and visitor areas are prepared before opening.
  • Help create a welcoming, educational, organized, and safe experience for visitors.
  • Develop procedures for admissions, donations, visitor flow, animal interactions, and closing responsibilities.
Financial & Administrative Management
  • Manage the organization’s operating budget in coordination with the Board.
  • Receive, document, deposit, and track incoming funds.
  • Pay approved organizational bills and maintain accurate financial records.
  • Track revenue and expenses and provide regular financial updates to the Board.
  • Maintain organized records, receipts, invoices, contracts, and other administrative documents.
  • Help create realistic budgets for programming, events, animal care, and fundraising initiatives.
Social Media & Community Communication

  • Keep the community informed about animals, open days, programs, events, volunteer opportunities, and organizational updates.
  • Capture or coordinate simple, authentic photos and videos that reflect the Sugar Roots mission.
  • Maintain a consistent and positive public voice for the organization.
Programming & Fundraising
  • Gradually develop educational programming at the new Batture location.

  • Organize seasonal events and community engagement opportunities.
  • Develop and coordinate fundraising events and campaigns.
  • Help identify partnerships, sponsorships, grants, donors, and other opportunities to financially support the organization.
  • Evaluate programs and events based on mission impact, participation, cost, and sustainability.

  • Help establish practical systems, procedures, and routines for the new location.
  • Keep the Board informed of significant animal, staffing, financial, programming, or operational issues.
  • Represent Sugar Roots Farm professionally with visitors, partners, donors, volunteers, vendors, and members of the community.
  • Help guide the organization as programming and operations grow.
Ideal Candidate

  • Highly dependable, organized, and able to manage multiple responsibilities.
  • Comfortable working independently and taking initiative.
  • Warm and confident working with staff, volunteers, families, and community members.
  • Comfortable managing schedules, budgets, bills, and basic financial records.
  • Familiar with Instagram and basic social media management.
  • Creative and excited about developing educational programming, events, and fundraisers.
  • Flexible and comfortable working in a growing organization where responsibilities may evolve.
  • Able to balance hands-on work at The Batture with administrative work that may be completed remotely.
