Position Title: Executive Director

Compensation: $100,000 [lower bound] annually for full-time employment (exempt); salary commensurate with experience

Reports To: Board of Directors

Direct Reports: Senior Leadership Team

Organizational Overview

Kaleidoscope Youth Center (KYC) is Ohio’s largest and longest-serving nonprofit dedicated exclusively to LGBTQ+ youth and young adults. Through free, inclusive, and youth-centered programming, KYC provides affirming community spaces, peer-led affinity groups, wellness and leadership opportunities, and statewide education and advocacy. Based in Columbus and serving communities across Ohio, KYC helps young people build confidence, connection, and resilience so they can live authentically and thrive.

Position Summary

KYC is currently navigating a significant period of organizational transition, financial restructuring, and operational realignment. Following a period of organizational reassessment, the Board of Directors has determined that the organization would benefit from experienced leadership focused on stabilization, operational sustainability, and organizational evaluation. The Board also recognizes the importance of maintaining and rebuilding strong relationships within the Columbus philanthropic, nonprofit, civic, and LGBTQ+ communities during this transition period. Candidates with established local relationships and fundraising experience are strongly preferred.

KYC is seeking proposals from qualified individuals capable of providing strategic and operational leadership during this transition period.

Scope of Services
Organizational Stabilization & Transition Leadership
  • Assess organizational structure, operations, staffing capacity, and operational risks
  • Partner with the Board of Directors to establish realistic short- and medium-term organizational priorities
  • Support organizational restructuring, operational alignment, and change management
  • Help develop a sustainable operating model aligned with current organizational capacity and resources
Financial Oversight & Sustainability
  • Provide fiscal leadership, budgeting oversight, cash flow management, and financial planning
  • Evaluate financial systems, reporting practices, and organizational sustainability strategies
  • Ensure compliance with grant, contract, audit, and regulatory requirements
  • Support prioritization of funding opportunities and resource allocation
Operations & Team Leadership
  • Oversee day-to-day organizational operations and ensure continuity of core programs and services
  • Support staff through a period of organizational transition with transparency, accountability, and empathy
  • Clarify operational workflows, decision-making structures, and organizational expectations
  • Supervise and support existing leadership staff, where applicable
Board Partnership & Strategic Planning
  • Serve as a strategic advisor and operational partner to the Board of Directors
  • Provide regular organizational, operational, and financial reporting to the Board
  • Help assess future organizational structure and leadership needs
  • Support development of an organizational roadmap for future sustainability and growth
External Relations & Stakeholder Engagement
  • Cultivate and maintain relationships with funders, community partners, philanthropic partners, civic leaders, and key community stakeholder groups
  • Represent KYC publicly
  • Support organizational credibility and transparency
  • Support fundraising strategy, donor engagement, and organizational sustainability
  • Leverage existing Columbus-area relationships and networks to strengthen organizational partnerships and visibility
Desired Qualifications & Experience
  • Experience leading nonprofit organizations through transition, restructuring, stabilization, and/or periods of financial challenge
  • Strong financial management, budgeting, and operational oversight experience
  • Experience partnering closely with nonprofit boards and navigating organizational environments
  • Demonstrated ability to balance strategic leadership with hands-on operational execution
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Experience in nonprofit leadership, consulting, operations, finance, and/or organizational development
  • Prior Executive Director, COO, CFO, or equivalent senior leadership experience preferred
  • Experience working with LGBTQIA+ communities, youth-serving organizations, or other mission-driven environments is preferred, but not required
Engagement Structure
  • Full time (or agreed-upon contract engagement)
  • Flexible structure based on organizational needs and professional experience
  • Anticipated term of approximately 24 months, with extension options based on individual interest and organizational needs
  • Hybrid work environment with regular on-site presence in Columbus, Ohio expected
  • Compensation commensurate with experience and proposed engagement structure
  • Worker classification (employee vs. independent contractor) will be determined by the selected engagement structure and the degree of organizational direction and control over the work; the benefits described below apply to employment engagements only

Work Environment & Location

KYC is headquartered in Columbus, Ohio, and operates in a hybrid work environment. This role requires a regular on-site presence and occasional regional or national travel. In-office work at our headquarters is preferred more than 50% of the time.
