Job description

Position: Executive Director (ED)
Organization: Coalition of Advanced Practice Registered Nurses of Indiana (CAPNI)
Reports To: Board of Directors (BOD)

Position Overview: The ED serves as the chief executive of CAPNI, responsible for the overall management and strategic direction of the organization. The ED works collaboratively with the BOD to develop long-term goals, oversee daily operations, and ensure fiscal sustainability. This role requires strong leadership, operational expertise, and advocacy experience to enhance CAPNI’s mission and services. The ED will work remotely within Indiana with attendance of in-person meetings and events as directed by the BOD.

Key Responsibilities 1. BOD Relations
  • Provide visionary leadership to ensure that CAPNI’s mission and values are upheld.
  • Collaborate with the BOD to set the organization’s strategic goals and objectives.
  • Provide reports on CAPNI’s status in meeting strategic goals and objectives and recommend changes at BOD meetings.
  • Develop short and long-term action plans for the organization in coordination with the BOD.
  • Support operations and administration of BOD directives.
  • Advise and inform BOD members regarding the organization’s operations and programs.
  • Act as the primary liaison between the BOD, staff, and volunteers.
  • Maintain a deep understanding of nonprofit healthcare member association trends, regulations, and best practices to ensure the organization is adaptive and forward-thinking.
2. Organization and Program Management
  • Oversee the design, marketing, delivery, and quality of programs, products, and services.
  • Develop and maintain a robust evaluation framework to assess program outcomes and implement improvements.
  • Ensure the legal and regulatory integrity of the organization.
  • Plan and execute educational and leadership events for the organization.
  • Maintain the organization’s database system, website, social media presence, and technological infrastructure.
  • Work with the BOD to create and implement policies and procedures to maintain efficient operations.
3. Fiscal Management and Budgeting
  • Develop and monitor the annual budget in collaboration with the treasurer and finance committee.
  • Prudently manage CAPNI’s financial resources within budget guidelines and regulatory standards using QuickBooks.
  • Oversee all fiscal activities, including budgeting, reporting, audits, processing and depositing payments received, and issuing payments to external sources.
  • Develop and implement fundraising initiatives as directed by the BOD.
  • Ensure financial transparency and long-range budget planning.
  • Prepare and submit all required tax forms in a timely manner.
4. Human Resource Management
  • Establish and oversee the organizational structure, volunteer, and staffing needs.
  • Develop and manage human resources according to authorized policies and legal regulations.
  • Maintain, update, and ensure adherence to CAPNI bylaws and policies.
  • Foster a work environment that attracts, retains, and supports high-quality staff and volunteers.
  • Supervise and mentor contractors and volunteers.
  • Train and delegate tasks to staff and volunteers as appropriate.
  • Interpret BOD direction and ensure its execution by staff and volunteers.
  • Maintain an organized calendar of responsibilities and tasks.
5. Membership, Community, and Public Relations
  • Represent CAPNI’s mission, programs, and services with a positive and consistent public image.
  • Develop and implement membership recruitment and retention strategies.
  • Establish and maintain relationships with legislative and professional groups.
  • Serve as a spokesperson for the organization alongside the President.
  • Manage CAPNI’s publications, including news updates, newsletters, and website content.
6. Advocacy and Legislative Oversight
  • Provide oversight of CAPNI’s legislative, grassroots, and regulatory functions.
  • Manage and maintain lobbying contracts.
  • Establish and nurture relationships with key constituencies, including but not limited to the Hoosiers for Healthcare Access Coalition.
  • Oversee the function and reporting of Healthcare Access for Hoosiers PAC activities.
  • Represent CAPNI at the Indiana General Assembly in a professional and knowledgeable manner.
  • In collaboration with CAPNI’s lobbyist and the Legislative Committee, track local, state, and federal legislation that could impact APRN practice. Vet this information with the BOD and disseminate to the membership in a timely manner.
  • Advocate for policies and practices that support CAPNI’s mission and values.
Employment Terms
  • Position Type: Full-time salaried role.
  • Work Hours: 40 hours per week , typically Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM (EST), with a one-hour unpaid lunch break. The schedule may vary during weeks when travel or attendance at CAPNI meetings, events, or conferences is required.
  • Location : This is a remote position; however the candidate must reside in the state of Indiana and be available to attend in-person meetings and events as directed by the BOD.
  • Travel: Occasional travel required. Travel expenses are covered for attendance at events required by the BOD.
  • Salary : $90,000 - $110,000 , based on experience & qualifications.
  • Benefits: $25,000 benefit allowance provided for health, dental, or other professional expenses. $3,000 professional development allowance provided for training as directed by the BOD.
  • Time Off: 4 weeks (20 days) of paid time off per year, plus all major holidays (New Year’s Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day).
  • Employment Contract: Must sign an employment contract that outlines job description, performance reviews, resignation policy, termination policy, code of conduct and confidentiality.
Qualifications and Skills
  • Master’s degree or higher in nonprofit or business management, a health-related or legal field, or a related field (preferred).
  • Proven experience in organizational management and/or leadership.
  • Strong financial acumen with experience in budget oversight and fiscal planning.
  • Knowledge of healthcare policy and advocacy.
  • Excellent communication, public relations, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with a BOD, staff, and volunteers.
  • Experience in membership growth strategies.
  • Proficiency in technology, database management, and social media.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Ability to travel as required for conferences, training, and advocacy events.
