Qualifications

  • Five+ years of leadership/management in nonprofit or community organization.
  • Experience in fundraising, donor cultivation or grant development preferred.
  • Understanding of Jewish values, traditions, and communal life.
  • Demonstrated budgeting, financial management, and operational oversight.

About Jewish Cemeteries of Greater Cincinnati

The Jewish Cemeteries of Greater Cincinnati (JCGC) is a nonprofit organization that manages 25 local Jewish cemeteries, coordinates burials, supports families during times of loss, preserves historic grounds, and provides educational and community programming.

About the Role

JCGC is seeking a thoughtful, hands-on individual to lead an organization that plays an essential role in Cincinnati's Jewish community. The Executive Director has overall responsibility and accountability for the management, execution, and implementation of all aspects of the organization. The Executive Director oversees operations, staff, facilities, cemetery services, financial administration, and community and family relations, while serving as its primary public representative. Working in partnership with the Board of Directors, the Executive Director translates the organization’s mission, policies, and strategic priorities into effective day-to-day operations and ensures their successful execution.

Responsibilities

Reporting to the Board of Trustees and its Executive Committee, the Executive Director will:

Executive Leadership & Development
  • Provide strategic and operational leadership for the organization.
  • Advise the Board on long-term organizational planning and development and collaborate with the Board to develop and implement annual plans, programs, and initiatives.
  • Facilitate Board meetings in conjunction with the Board President.
  • Participate in evening Board, committee, and agency meetings.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Board.
Operations & Facilities
  • Oversee and manage JCGC's cemeteries and burial operations with the highest level of care, dignity, professionalism and sensitivity to families.
  • Plan, oversee, and manage the annual operating budget and financial resources.
  • Establish, manage, and direct cemetery policies, procedures, and services in coordination with the Board while interacting with rabbis and clergy, funeral directors, and bereaved families.
  • Supervise cemetery development and maintenance in compliance with local, state, and federal regulations and industry best practices.
  • Supervise the planning, preparation, and implementation of construction, capital, and major projects with suppliers, architects, and contractors.
  • May be on call for burial arrangements.
Staff Management & Human Resources
  • Supervise the Office team, the Foreman, and field staff.
  • Develop and enforce personnel policies and procedures.
Community Relations
  • Manage community relations, public relations, and relationships with congregations and partner agencies.
  • Plan and oversee organizational events, ceremonies, and community engagement activities.
  • Participate in community events, including occasional evenings and weekends.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience.
  • Five or more years of experience in a nonprofit, community-based organization, business management, or similar environment.
  • Successful fundraising experience, including donor cultivation, major gifts, annual giving, and grant development is preferred but not required.
  • The successful candidate must demonstrate an understanding of and commitment to Jewish values, traditions, and communal life, consistent with JCGC's mission.
  • Demonstrated experience in staff management, budgeting, financial management, and operational oversight.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, QuickBooks, and donor database or CRM systems.
  • Strong leadership and project management skills with the ability to work independently while managing a broad range of responsibilities.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, coupled with a customer-service mindset and the ability to interact with empathy, professionalism, and sensitivity in difficult situations.
  • Knowledge of cemetery operations or prior experience in the cemetery industry is preferred but not required.
