Job summary

Oregon Department of Environmental Quality is seeking a Deputy Director (Deputy/Chief 6) to lead, coordinate, and enforce environmental laws across air, water, and land. The role is based in Portland with potential hybrid work and requires engaging with the Governor’s cabinet and interagency coordination.

The position emphasizes strategic planning, organizational leadership, and the advancement of environmental justice, equity, and inclusion across all programs.

Qualifications

• Progressive management experience in a government agency or organization.
• Demonstrated leadership and commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives.
• Experience managing multiple large, complex programs, division, and services, preferably in environmental/natural resources.

Responsibilities

• Lead administration of enforcing laws regulating air, water, and land pollution.
• Administer authorities delegated by EPA and state statutes across air, water, waste, and cleanup; integrate Environmental Justice.
• Provide leadership to DEQ statewide staff and represent the Agency to partners and stakeholders.
• Coach, mentor, and develop staff; set objectives and evaluate performance.
