Job summary

The Oregon Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) seeks a Deputy Director to lead and supervise the agency’s executive functions from our Portland HQ. You will drive policy, regulatory enforcement, and interagency collaboration, with a focus on environmental justice and organizational health.

With a mandate to protect Oregon’s air, land, and water, you will mentor a large team, engage with the Governor’s cabinet, and represent DEQ to partners and communities.

Qualifications

• Progressive management experience in a government agency or organization.
• Leadership and commitment to promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives.
• Experience managing multiple large, complex programs, divisions, and services.

Responsibilities

• Lead and direct administration of laws regulating air, water, and land pollution.
• Oversee authorities delegated by EPA, including Clean Air, Clean Water, and Resource Conservation acts.
• Coordinate with Governor’s cabinet and interagency partners; support DEQ leadership.
• Demonstrate proactive communication, innovation, and mentoring across statewide staff.
• Foster organizational health and cross-training; set objectives and evaluate performance.
