Job description

Referment is working with a global investment firm seeking an attorney to advise on executive compensation and employee benefits. The lawyer will join a small legal and compliance team supporting a varied set of investment and commercial activities, including alternative investment strategies and newer business ventures.

The role combines specialist compensation work with close commercial partnership. You will structure, draft, and negotiate arrangements involving cash and equity, advise stakeholders on benefits questions, and help the business understand the practical implications of complex legal requirements. There is also scope to contribute to legal analysis outside the core specialism as the firm evaluates existing and potential activities.

The Role
  • Advise business and people-function stakeholders on the legal and commercial dimensions of executive compensation and employee-benefit matters.
  • Draft, review, analyse, and negotiate sophisticated cash and equity compensation arrangements.
  • Support the design and operation of employee-benefit plans and related agreements.
  • Identify legal, regulatory, documentation, and implementation issues, explaining their practical consequences clearly to non-specialist colleagues.
  • Work across matters involving investment-management businesses and other commercial activities, balancing technical legal analysis with business judgment.
  • Research and advise on adjacent legal questions arising from established operations or potential new initiatives.
  • Manage sensitive personal and commercial information with close attention to accuracy and confidentiality.
What We're Looking For
  • A law degree and at least four years of executive-compensation and benefits experience gained in private practice, in-house, or through a combination of the two.
  • Meaningful experience drafting complex executive-compensation arrangements for investment managers or other financial-services businesses.
  • Excellent legal analysis, drafting, negotiation, communication, and organisational skills.
  • Strong commercial judgment and the ability to give practical advice on technically demanding matters.
  • Close attention to detail and a strong record of handling sensitive work responsibly.
Desirable Experience

Working knowledge of employee-benefits law, including relevant pensions and healthcare legislation, is strongly useful because benefits questions form a meaningful part of the day-to-day remit.

This could suit a compensation and benefits associate from a leading law firm, or an in-house lawyer within an asset manager or financial institution, who wants broader ownership and close contact with business decision-makers.
